I have MGE (unpatched) and I have never played any other version of civ. One aspect of the game which I have pretty much given up on is diplomacy. I keep my reputation spotless, for the most part. I usually run Democracies, do not expand outrageously after the early era of the game. Early in games, especially on the higher levels, I often pay tributes to keep peace because I am trying to build up my cities and do not want war until I have clear technical superiority. In spite of all this, the AI civs are invariably hostile, icy or enraged. Even if I use gifts to pump one up to worshipful it only lasts until then end of that meeting. The next time I meet that civs embassador, the hostility returns. Moreover, AI civs will never trade maps, which is the only form of commerce inwhich I am interested. The only use I have for diplomacy is annoying my peace partners into declaring war so I can crush them, which is incredibly easy, since they are always hatin' on me anyway.

I have seen statements on this board which suggest that the MGE ai is uniquiely hostile. Is this the case? If so, what can I do about it?

In MGE, at deity, you can use diplomacy, but you have to constantly "stroke" the AI civs to keep them friendly. With a spotless rep, you have to gift a civ til its enthusiastic or worshipfull toward you before it will trade maps.

You should download the latest patch for MGE, (its available here in the downloads area). The patch is #3, dated 26 March 1999. It mollifies the hostility a little bit. I think its version 5.4.

In general, in MGE, as the game goes on, the AI will become more and more hostile toward you, and if you launch a spaceship, you are confirmed as target number one!! On the positive side, the AI is pretty stupid and you can easily outwit it. :)
