Mid game choking

Hi guys. I've recently got the bug with civ. I played maybe 2/3 civ games before, never played any good nor did I understand the game.

Civ 6 and potato Mcwhiskey got me hooked though. I do understand adjacencies, can plan moderately my districts, I manage tiles, I can race for great people and can plan for a strategy more or less.

However I have a hard time planning my civic trees properly to align my game. Also I can compete with the pc until the mid game where my advantage starts falling of terribly.

Currently I'm playing Saladin with religion spliced, got the first religion + wat's and +3 campuses, I'm a bit lower on cities than the pc, however I have a huge area free to expand. I guess that area will be the difference maker this game. But I'm not that knowledgeable on how do I make this split strat work.

Any advice on mid game focus?

It will depend partly on what level difficulty you're playing, and what size map. (I play Deity on standard size.)

That said, I recommend going for Monarchy as soon as possible. The extra military policy slots allow you to develop/expand/afford your military. Walls provide for growth (from their housing), and you can afford to employ Limes to build them twice as fast; and eventually they could provide culture and/or science. Plus you get +50% towards envoy generation. And if you're at peace, you can employ Retainers for extra amenities.

The main problem is that the info that you provided is just not detailed enough to be able to accurately assess your situation and provide you with tips that would personally help your gameplay. If you are interested in that, you should add the basic info about your game (difficulty level, setup) and add a screenshot or two or maybe even a savegame.

Without that, any advise will be limited to generic tips that you might find useful. Some pointers that came to mind:
  • If you want to win, you should focus on your victory condition. Arabia is fine for science or religion, and the key to victory is building the districts and all of the available buildings in all of your cities. If you do that, you are almost done.
  • Also, make sure that you have enough cities to grind out the victory. Although the more the merrier approach does apply in Civ6, getting 8-10 cities by turn 120 should be enough. Take care to run the Colonization policy card for the Settler production bonus and do make sure that you build enough Settlers.
  • Culture can be a bottleneck, but to be honest, you don't really need that much culture for a religion game. Also, if you are able to snatch first religion, then you should definitely take the Choral Music belief (culture from Holy Sites) and you basically won't have to worry about culture at all for the rest of game (provided that you build your Holy Sites in all your cities).
  • Your midgame civic progression depends heavily on your victory condition. Your number one goal should be the swift acquisition of one of the T2 Government Civics. If you are going for religion, you should be beelining for Reformed Church and immediately switch to Theocracy. In any other game, going for Theology for the quick Monarchy might be useful, but personally I would argue for going on the upper branches of the civic tree and grabbing Exploration for Merchant Republic. Feudalism is also a key civic that should be beelined as it brings the most important Card in the game: Serfdom provides your Builders with 5 charges instead of 3 which is actually a huge deal.
  • Military can be useful, but on lower difficulties, it's absolutely not hard to be friendly with all your neighbors, just send a delegation when you meet them, get open borders and maybe do a few luxury trades. Being friends makes you immune from attacks and costs nothing that is siginificantly cheaper than building up a military.
If you have any questions, I would be certainly happy to help.

You seem to have recognized this yourself, and it's mentioned above, but continuing to expand is crucial. Once you get your core 4-6 major cities, it's still worth expanding to add secondary cities for a few reasons: (i) specific resources (strategic and/or luxury), (ii) specific locations - such as coast or to block off opponents, (iii) specialization (stick an encampment in a city with a bunch of hills and pump out troops, or CH/Harbor on a coastal city with resources to slot Reyna in and make money), (iv) to keep churning towards your victory condition. If you're going science - which it sounds like you are - getting extra campuses and buildings in those campuses are worth it even if the city otherwise doesn't contribute a whole lot.
