Hi There,

Picked up ToT cheaply a couple of months ago. It's one of the most addictive games I have played - the just another turn factor is extremely high. I remember playing the original Civ2 to death several years ago, but this is a sufficiently new experience.

After learning how to crawl in the Fantasy world, I fired up Midgard as the Stygians on King level. I had ca. three false starts, but now I'm doing reasonably well. There are a couple of things I would like to ask about though.

1. I can't seem to find a way to cross the sea in the underground level with the Stygians (I have only been able to fly across). How is that done?

2. In my latest game, I decided on furious expansion and went asap for Monarchy. After getting that, I have started improving the area around my cities, and I'm just about to start exploring the seas in the surface world. I'm unsure which (research) goal to set next (other than continued expansion).

I managed to get a good grip on the forest island, but lost the ice area due to bad luck - a barbarian J'o'L materialised just as I had built my first city there, and I did not have time to defend it

. The Barbarians then materialised a Dragon (or some such) that toasts all the units I have managed to get anywhere close to that city. I'll get it eventually, though

.

I like the researtch tree in Midgard much better than the one in the Fantasy game. The basic milestones (Monarchy, Golden Orchard, Excalibur) are much harder to get to in Midgard, at least as the Stygians (haven't tried any others).

When you say ToT is different than Civ2, how do you mean? There are multiple levels to the map? I have never even seen the box(irl) for the game.

Well, there are several reviews out there, and some dedicated sites like http://www.users.bigpond.com/kestrel18/ and http://civ.cx/ but I can give you a short overview. I can really only compare it to the original Civ2.

There can be up to 4 levels/maps in a game, with the same dimensions - imagine them stacked on top of each when moving between maps, even if they are located in different star systems

. The terrain is different, but the basic functionality is the same. The tech is different too, but again the basic functionality is the same. And the units ofc. You can make scenarios with an edited tech tree and, I suppose, with changed units. Not sure about the terrain, but I suppose that's editable too. And it has a rudimentary event specification language. The user interface is tweaked a bit (e.g. it has a better city layout IMO, but you can still use the old one).

The game comes with the original game, the extended original where you can continue playing at AC, a SF setting, a Fantasy setting and a Midgard scenario similar to, but not identical to the Fantasy setting.

I bought it for approx. 13 USD, that was definitely good value for the price.

Enjoy,

Robert
