Good evening,
I just finished playing a game with Markus and Ophidity, and I must say i am unimpressed. Their "strategy" consists of building as many happy wonders as possible, attaining "the republic" advance as fast as possible, jacking up the luxury rate under the republic, and, when they have enough cash in their coffers, win the game by bribing civilizations without happy wonders and warring against those without. Those without happy wonders are doomed to lose.

No WONDER (pun intented) they want to play without wonders, without city bribe, and on king level. The happy wonders destabalize the game, the diplomats are unstoppable when one player has two or more of the happy wonders, and king allows for greater military action and the use of wonders.

This has to be the lamest "strategy" i have ever seen. Well, okay, not the lamest; I have played RISK many times, and know that the Indonesia "strategy" debalances the game ...

Now, Risk is obviously a flawed game: it is based largely on luck, the country and continental borders are far too simplistic (allowing for Indonesia and North American to dominate), and the "production" factor, ie turning in cards, while creating a certain level of excitement, turns the game into a "who gets the cards first". These flaws are fundamentals that can not be changed. Any rules you add, you still have RISK.

Fortunately, civ is different. The inherent flaws, mikes without expiration and bachs without expiration, can be cleaned up quite simply. Limit mikes and bachs.

This is my suggestion:

Mikes expires with the corporation (the rise of secularism) and Bach's expires with electronics (the rise of secular toys).

Limit these, and the game becomes much more stable, much more skilled based, and less lame.

I think that the "Race for the Wonders" has always been somewhat of a problem in this game. Especially in the transition from playing vs. the AI to playing against real people... irregardless of what particular Wonder is being talked about. The best solution for this .. I think, is to get a 4th & possibly a 5th person.. involved & consider going to a smaller map where people are not guaranteed to be left alone so long as to get their Wonder building machine going at full roar.

BTW... I meant to add that I saw your thread on Game preferences & It was one of the best that I have seen in this section so far.

I dont need these happy wonders. In a deity game I simply put luxeries to 60%, build temples, marketplaces and banks. then slowly turn back the luxery rate to 30% once your economy is getting large (yes, with marketplaces and banks your cities are happy, but you also get lots of GOLD).

with the strong economy you buy the temples in the smaller cities, then buy the marketplaces. In deity, with a little effort, you can stay 30 to 40 cities happy with only temples, marketplaces and banks and you are also able to compete in the bribe war.

Ofcourse you have to start in monarchy, but you can switch when you have lots of temples.

I wish people would stop talking about playing the stinking AI ..in the Multiplayer Section.

I'm sorry Woke... read your post a little closer... would like to know how often you have used this strategy in Multiplayer with 3 or more human players ? How does it seem to work..? It seems that you would have to sacrifice a lot of tech to do this early.

I suggest a game using Agharta's suggestions. I am up for the challenge if anyone else is.

if you would know me a little better before jumping to conlcusions: I NEVER PLAY AGAINST THE AI. this means i always use this in MP. the tech is no problem, i steal it. stealing is too simple to even discuss.

Oh no...stealing is not too simple to discuss, if you you steal from a "place holder" AI...that's one thing. If you steal it from a human player that's another. In the last case it is liable to have repercussions both inside & outside of the game, especially if you are in a game with 3 or more human players. While I agree that you should not be penalised for your game tactics, barring cheating of course, outside of the game, people being what they are.. it's likely to happen.

Of course a lot depends on the context in which the "stealing" occurs.

Well one reason i don't like Civfanatics ladder games is people try to win as quick as possible which is stupid and defies the point of the game, i like to play atleast to where i can build an empire.

I usually switch to democracy A.S.A.P in MP games so people can't bribe me. I fight wars by bribing too. Siege mech infantry is just plain hard.
