I tried building the military academy when I discovered military tradition. However, I was unable to build the academy. It did not give me the option for it in my city screen. Not sure what I am missing.

My only guess is that I needed to have had a leader at some time during the game. Is this true? Do you need a leader dead or alive at some point during the game to be able to build the military academy?

Anybody know?

You have to have had a victorious army at some point.

To answer your question, yes, you do need a great leader. This is something that is rather vague in the documentation. Eyerei is right. You need to have a victorious army. Which means you need to have an army. Which means you need to have a great leader. And you can't use it for rush building a wonder, either. You have to expend it building an army.

Luckily, you only need one, because AFTER you have a victorious army, you can build the Military Academy, after which you can build more armies.

You can build the Heroic Epic too, which is supposed to increase the chance that you'll get a great leader. But you have to get the first one the hard way.

I always wonder if these kinds of things work exactly the way I think they're supposed to. The first time my first army won a battle, I got a pop-up box that said the people wanted me to build the Heroic Epic. I checked one of my cities, and the Heroic Epic showed up in my production selections box. I took that as a good sign that I understood it at least that far.
