Military Department Discussion: The Persian Expeditionary Force

The goal of our expeditionary force should be to break up and destroy any Persian offensive concentrations while minimizing our own losses, leading with veterans and killing with elites to get our next GL. I would strongly advocate sending along an infantry force to keep cavalry casualties down.

We have no prospects of taking and keeping cities down there, and should not be attempting to do so unless we have a chance at a coup-de-main.

One useful reason to take a city would be to make a gift of it to one of our allies. I'd expect to get some good will from that, and they would be stuck with trying to defend it against the Persians.

Feodor, I have found the prospect of gifting cities to other civs a near impossibility unless it is a city that used to belong to that civ.

Say Persia took a city from France. We could more than likely work some kind of a deal if we rescued that city and traded it back to France. However, my experience has shown that Joan would probably show no interest if we offered them city with a bunch of Persian citizens in it.

I do think that we should get some elites to the Persian front, and quickly. Now that we have built Universal Suffrage, we can try for GLs again.

I already have 3 elites on their way. And, if we DO get a GL, we can save this one for Hoover.

The 1270 deployment is looking good. We can reinforce quickly as units become available and our scouts assess the situation.

I have examinede your *expeditionary* force as seen in the 1270 save and remain unimpressed. I see a modest number of unsupported Cavalry. I hope you don't want them back, cause your chances are slim at best.

There is a parallel in history for what I see. Greater literary minds than mine penned a famous poem about that fateful day when the English Light Brigade was similarly committed.
