Scrolls, which Gamasutra was shown before GDC at the company's offices in Sweden, is set to be a collectible card game with board game elements. Players will build decks of 'scrolls' and use the various effects to cast spells and summon units for use against their opponents.

Scrolls is Mojang's next game and offers a new and unique game play where you fight to outmaneuver your opponent on the battlefield using the destructive powers in your collection of magical scrolls. Tear your opponent limb from limb with the might of your summoned armies, lay waste to the defenses with the obliterating power of your siege weapons or open up the very skies and let bolts of lightning shower his minions until only ash remains. The road to victory is yours to choose. Obtain the powerful scrolls and decide which ones you will take to battle as you fight to become the mightiest Magician of all.

It doesn't sound particularly interesting. Cryptic Comet have already brought out a few strategy games played with decks of cards, like Armageddon Empires and Solium Infernum.

As long as it does not involve:

1) Spending real money to purchase cards, like a physical TCG
or
2) Investing enormous amounts of gameplay time to save points used to purchase cards

I will be interested. Either of the above elements, though, will kill my interest.

Unfortunately it sounds like it includes exactly that:

PC Gamer: Is the game free to play? If not, what kind of price range are you thinking?

Jakob Porser: You acquire scrolls by purchasing spell books which contains a set number of randomly inserted scrolls, but actually doing battle against other opponents is free. In single player you will be able to acquire items and scrolls without purchasing them, so its really up to the player how much they want to spend on the game.

As for the spell books we haven’t set a price yet, but expect it to be less then the cost of many other CCGs.

Sounds like a Magic: The Gathering spinoff. That was so 90s! (and Pogs, and Pokemon trading cards...)

Where was this thread two seconds ago? i scanned up and down and saw no Scrolls thread so i made a new one, and suddenly this one appears! i need new glasses i think :)

As for Scrolls, even after looking at the site i'm still not really sure what its about, card game you say? based on or actual card game? i'l have to try find out more.

Mmm... microtransactions where you can't even see what you're getting.

Did I say it wasn't?

Although saying that, Fantasy Flight Games offers card games where the packs have fixed contents. They were about to drop the Call of Cthulhu line when they made the switch to fixed packs. This actually increased their sales and they relaunched it in the new format. They later converted their other card games like A Game of Thrones into the same format because it worked better.

Too little information, as of this moment, to really decide if the game is going to be 'fun' or not. It could be really entertaining if done correctly, but might be pretty god awful too. Unlike some of the others though I really enjoy card games so that doesn't bother me at all.
