Hello Prof. Garfield,

Would you be so kind as to tell me what date your Garfield quotation appeared in the comic strip? I've been searching for it high and low.

Thanks,
Eric

You can avoid the change to musketeers by selecting a building or wonder. It will ask if you want to take the 50% cut and you can select "No".

It never appeared in a commic strip. It was from the cartoon show series that aired a decade or so ago. (A couple seasons have appeared on DVD recently, though.) I may have mis-quoted slightly, I recently watched the show on DVD and I think that "taking" should actually be "getting", but it doesn't take away from the idea anyway, so I wasn't in a hurry to change it, then I forgot.

I'm living in Abu Dhabi now, and I would love to get my hands on one of those strips that mentions it... you wouldn't happen to have a date I could look up online?

Sorry to bother you again. I find it so funny... Abu Dhabi is actually extraordinarily modern and glitzy. And there are cats everywhere. Nermal would have a blast here.

Best,
Eric

Garfield mailing (or trying to mail) Nermal to Abu Dhabi is somewhat of a running gag, at least on the show. I don't read the commic strips all that often, but I would immagine that you could find one somewhere mentioning Abu Dhabi. The Garfield website is www.garfield.com.

A quick question - I try black clicking but don't see any co-ordinates in the right panel. Is there a way to get this to show? Thx:)

Right-click once on a tile that is visible and you should see a blinking white diamond outlining the tile and something like this at the top of the right-hand info bar:
Loc: (25,35) 9
This tells you the tile's location (measured from the upper left corner of the unwrapped map - when you get to (0,0) on a "round" map the next left one will be the far right side), and the "continent number" of the land you clicked on. Each island is assigned a number, and some lakes that are large enough are also assigned numbers. The main ocean is number 1, and the very first island will also be assigned number 1 too, so when there is one large continent it can be difficult to tell them apart. Small lakes are assigned the number 63 - note that many things in Civ2 are base2, including limit of 64 numbers for islands and seas. Black-clicking does not tell you what "kind" of land is under the black, just whether anything might be there and whether it might be connected to a revealed continent number.

Thanks ElephantU, but I can't see any Loc co-ordinates anywhere. Maybe when I installed Civ 2 this time it hasn't set something up properly. Doesn't seem to be any menu options available to turn this feature on though....

Interesting re the 2 dips stacked - will have to give it a try!

Just seen a screenshot and I don't see the Loc part:

Any idea how to get it showing? Thx:)

Sorry - I wasn't clear. I captured this pic from the forums, and on my machine I don't see that Loc line with the numbers. I just see the terrain type and farmland etc etc. So I'm wondering how to get the Loc showing like in the pic. Thx

Tried this with no success. No clue what to try....sigh. Guess I'll just have to live without black clicking - think I'll get over it. Thx anyway.

I actually run ye olde v 1.02! I'll try updating to v 2.42 and see what happens. I've been trying to remember whether I did see it on my old PC, but its been a while since I last played Civ2.

Here is a conquest strategy that I have found to work but it can only really be applied successfully prior to the discovery of Guerilla Warfare (so that there are no Partisans). I have based it on the Roman idea of building fortifications around cities which are under seige. Basically amass 4x settlers/engineers, 3x or 4x catapults/cannons, 3x or 4x knights/crusaders/dragoons, 3x or 4x legions/musketeers/riflemen and at least one diplomat/spy. Then either occupy or build a fortress as close to the enemy city as possible (try for at least one square away) and then put all of these troops in this fortress. Then on the next turn send out just one settler/engineer so that he is adjacent to the enemy city and have him build a fortress, all the other troops must hold back. Nine times out of ten the AI civ will not attack your settler/engineer (which I know is crazy but it's true). On the next turn put all of your settler/engineers into the same square and have them build the fortress, the fortress will immediately appear and this is when you put your army into this fortress square. In between turns the AI city will attack the fortress but in my experience will at best only injure slightly one or two units. On the next turn attack first using your catapults/cannons, use your diplomat to investigate city to see how many other units are left, then attack using your knights/crusaders/dragoons and finally your legions/musketeers/dragoons. This stratgey works 100% and the AI doesn;t stand a chnace -in my last game I destroyed both the Babylonian and Russian civs before modern times using this srategy. Remember to pillage your fortresses after you are done.

Happy hunting!:wavey:
