Any advice for the following problem:

Before triremes, when I'm sending settlers to found my initial cities, I can only see water out one space from shore. Then later, when I start exploring the nearby seas, I often find that I missed a whale two spaces from shore, or misplace a city so it has one whale instead of, say, three (two hidden at first). I know there's a pattern for specials, but if you start with a lot of grassland you can't see much of that pattern. Someone mentioned that there's a formula so that if you see even one special, you can tell where they all are. Is this true? If so, what is it? Also, don't patterns vary game to game (there's a "seed" number in the map generator or something)? How have others here tackled this?

allan,

Here is a link to the thread about a map of where the specials & huts are located.

The "Map " is quite a ways down in the first post at 2.5.5.

While you can tell where a special should be, it will not indicate if you will
later find a whale or just fishes in the unseen Ocean.

Moof,

Naw, I don't do chatrooms--they crash my computer more often than not with all those windows....

allan,

We are not much for chat either but we have found a couple places that are private so
that other people do not bother you when you are trying to figure out something.
One allows Private rooms & the other is empty 23 hours of each day.
We have yet to figure out how to get into the chatroom here.

Back to the original point, we found that map just a few weeks ago.
We wish it contained more area as when we make enlarged copies of it, and
tape them together, there is quite a bit of overlap to make a bigger map.
We now use the large spliced together copies on a push pin board so at a glance,
we can keep track of all our cities and units that are out in the field.
Not that we are Fanatics about the game or anything like that.
