The new spell on Fire/Sorcery level 1 was a real surprise. I saw it may burn down woods and jungle, which suits me fine, as I have lots of jungle, and no sanitation tech yet. In this game I am sharing a continent with several others and raging barbarians, and my whole production rests on the woods, which cover the continent around 70%, 10% of which are jungle.
So I go up to the hill with the jungle I want removed and cast the spell. All that happens is black smoke. I say to myself, this spell has maybe just a chance to clear a field of jungle, and retry next turn. It turns out, I cant cast it, so I conclude, it works maybe only once per field. I walk over to the next field and recast it there, getting only smoke again. Crap spell I thought, moving the mage away and looked up where sanitation is in the tech tree. On the next turn the first field went up in fire. Oh, I thought, I see, they made it so, that it takes as long as workers would need to preserve balance, useful spell, though. On the next turn the inferno flared up and sprang over to an area of 5x5 squares. Within 10 turns the continent went up in flames, burning away all the woods (and my production capacity).
Therefore, please, put some warning on the package, that using this spell may cause sudden and large changes to the environment![]()
Btw, it *did* remove the jungle after all, so the description was correct, if maybe not complete...![]()
Running Kuriotates. I'm trying to build cities and I end up with "settlements". These are like cities but with a pop of 1 and that cannot grow beyond that or add buildings. How do I get them to behave like normal CIV4 cities???
You can't.
The kuriotates are limited to a few large cities. (number based on map size)
You will have noticed that you can work three rows of tiles in each city, not the regular two.
You need to be careful how you place the three (usually) cities you will get.
Is it possible capture other cities and have them behave like normal CIV4 cities?
No.

I guess I don't understand the point of the limitation. If having the ability of using a 3-square radius for cities is an advantage specific to Kuriotates, it seems that such a limitation on remaining cities goes way too far as a counterbalance. I don't understand what the benefit is to creating "settlements" that apparently don't do much of anything -- you can't build anything with them. I'm confused as to the overall strategy of Kuriotates at this point.
Kuriotates are builders. Over expansion does very little to help them. Conversely, since you do not pay maintenance on settlements it does very little to harm you either.
Settlements are useful for collecting resources and for denying enemies access to land.
Build up your core cities as much as possible. Grab any wonders you can that give bonuses to that city like the Crown of Akherien's +50% science.

Hilarious story. I personally find the spell a little overpowered against the non-reacting AI, so I only use it during wartime. Does anyone know what chance it actually has of clearing the forest/jungle? It seemed like every continent I burned just went up in flames for a while and no burnt forests were ever created.
I know this sounds stupid but where do I install the media pack and patch a?
