What is the maximumum mod limit in Civ5 BNW ?

I tried to launch a game with 255 (supposedly nonconflicting) mods enabled, but got a CTD. Googled for a mod limit, didn't find any info

While I don't know the limit if you think you've met it you can combine mods using whoward's ModTools.

You may simply have run out of memory. There are ways to determine exactly what caused the crash, but that sounds like overkill in this situation when you can use Whoward's tool.
