Off and on I've toyed around with this scenario trying to make it a bit more realistic and a little less unwieldy. For those unfamiliar with it, the scenario recreates the German-Soviet war from 1941-45. Below are some of the changes from the original scenario.
Draft units per city 2>1
Conscript hp 4>3
Food consumption per citizen doubled from 1 to 2. Food bonuses to select tiles to prevent cities from being in starvation mode at start. At the same time, this slows down city growth considerably and causes drafting to have more of a drain on population.
Higher unit costs.
Brought most Yak 1s up to 5hp
Reduced free unit support for Nazism
NKVD HQ bug fixed so it can be built anywhere. (I prefer Tankograd city)
For visual effect only, replaced Motorized Divisions with halftrack units from WW2 Global
One of the basic modifications in the game are the increased unit costs. Someone who enjoys playing with 1000 units and more would probably pass on this mod of the scenario. The idea here is to avoid 200 Panzer Divisions storming into Stalingrad in the Summer of 42.
Also, incorporated into unit costs is a sort of second-front factor that was not part of the original scenario. In calculating unit costs, Axis units incur an increase for latter-war equipment, reflecting the need to divert manpower and equipment as the western allies gradually expanded their fronts in Africa, the Italian theater and later of course, the invasion of western Europe. In fact, Axis airpower pays an even higher price than ground units as more and more fighter aircraft are forced to re-deploy west and fend off an almost constant allied bombing campaign. For that reason, an Me-262 jet fighter costs over three times that early-war Me-109.
To add to the Axis player challenge, while their costs are rising, Soviet costs are mitigated to some extent in units deployed mid-late game, as their factories are recovering and more resources are mobilized. Advanced factories are now almost exclusively adding to Soviet war production.
June 41-May 42 Tech Tree: Created 1942 Armor tech and put a number of unit builds there, including the SS units.
June 42- July 43 Tech Tree: Advanced Specialized Factories renamed Advanced Soviet Factories and is now an optional tech. The factories themselves require Stalinism. So the Axis Powers cannot build them. Specialized Factories are the same way, and re-named Specialized Soviet Factories. The Axis can still learn the Advanced Tank Factory Tech and build the Advanced Tank Factory.
New units:
Axis Powers
Panzer III-J Division
German Infantry 42
German Infantry 43-44
Tiger Detachment (3-hp unit)
King Tiger Detachment (3-hp unit)
JU-87G (Lethal land bombardment)
Fw-190 d9
Soviet Union
1943 and 1944-45 infantry
Soviet Artillery Corps (BM-8) (renamed Guards Mortar Regt)
Guards Division 43-45 (can fortify)
Both
Strategic City Garrison (4/24/0) 1000 shields
Corps transport capacity reduced from 3 to 2
Artillery now has a defense of 2 so it is not captured.
Historical changes:
German SS Divisions no longer are equipped with Tiger and King Tiger tanks. They now have the tanks with which they were historically equipped with, namely Panzer IV-H and Panther tanks. The Axis can still buy the Tigers as detachments as they were historically equipped as Schwere Panzer Abteilungen. While certain SS panzer divisions did have these tanks, they were typically only a companys worth.
So... onto a play test. Axis player, level General.
