With the popularity of 64bit OS's, it looks like Civ 1's days are numbered..
(16bit program, does not run in a 64bit environment)

Does anyone sometimes just wanna quick game with that warm nostalgic feel, without the clutter of religions and civics, cultural borders etc?

Think this can be done? I have zero experience with a total mod myself, nor the time to take it on.. But I really want to do this and I think others feel the same.

No. Why would you want to revert to a simplistic version of the game? That would be liking bringing back the Ford Model T, or 8 track music cassetes. Some things are better left obsolete.

For simplicity sake! :)
Same reason why people go back to DOS games. :p Nostalgia too....to go back to simpler times, when Phalanx warriors were the best defense possible until Gunpowder was discovered!

For comparison purposes, Colonization is pretty much just a Civ4 mod in its own package. Something like this!

Isnt there a program called DOSBox that allows you to run old games on a modern computer?

I've never played Civ 1, but it would probably be pretty easy to do with just xml. Not that I want to. Its always easy to remove complexity, very hard to add it without specialized programming and/or confusing the AI. Any mod that doesn't take full advantage of everything in the regular game is less than the regular game, not an improvement on it, unless it adds something new. Some of the mods that came with BtS get rid of corporations and religions and events, but they add so much else. I can think of reasons to make a much simplified Civ, for instance as a subgame of a larger galactic game. Or to play on a cell phone.

I've never modded Civ myself, but if its just deleting stuff out of the original XML, then maybe I should give it a shot.

Just to see if anyone would want it other than me! haha

Railroad = Steam Engine, Physics, Invention, Navigation, Bridge Building, Engineering, Astronomy, Construction, Literacy, Mathematics, Mysticism, Currency, Iron Working, Code of Laws, Writing, Map Making, The Wheel, Masonry, Ceremonial Burial, Bronze Working, Alphabet

Coal is for chumps!

I'm not sure how easily it can be done, since in the Civ1&2 days each unit had an attack and a defend power that were unrelated.

@Adjidica: Yep, DOSBOX is a great little program that allows you to play old DOS games on your modern PC. I used it to play Dizzy over Christmas.

@MqsTout: FfH has separate attack / defence values, so the code could be ported from there.

How important are the Civ IV graphics for you? A civ 1 mod is certainly doable, but just playing FreeCiv may be closer to Civ 1/Civ 2 style with less fuss.

Cheers, LT.
