Hello I recently added the MEM 2 mod to civ 3 but I'm getting weird text errors like below. As you can see the words are clear but definitely not in the right places. This has not appeared to effect the base game. Game is playable but just annoying so I'd appreciate any help you can give.

"Labels.txt" problem.

Solution depends on which version of C3C you're using (Steam/multi-player, or a single-player version?), and which version was used to create that mod.

I'm pretty sure I'm using the single player version, but I'm not sure how to confirm that. MEM is version 1.3

I never tried the MEM mod, and I don't know much about it -- including when it was first made.

But if you're using a (recent? GOG?) single-player version, and a normal epic-game doesn't give you these text-errors, that would strongly suggest to me that the MEM-specific labels.txt was actually adapted from the original multiplayer version of C3C (running on GameSpy, at that time).

If so, then you will need to go into your ..Conquests/Scenarios/[MEM]*/Text/ folder, and use any basic text-editor to open the labels.txt file that you should be able to find there. Then scroll down until you find the 2 lines "Ping"and "Host". If there is another line "Unknown" in between them, delete it, so that the file now looks like this

...
Ping
Host
...

Save and close the file, and start a test-game of MEM (you could also continue from a previous save, if you have one). If the problem is now fixed, then great, you can carry on. If not, let us know and maybe someone will be able to suggest something else.

* "[MEM]" here is just a placeholder, because I don't actually know what the MEM mod-maker called their mod-folder. But presumably you do...

I'm actually using the steam complete edition and the MEM txt file already doesn't include the Unknown between ping and host. I did try adding that between ping and host but that didn't work either. Not sure how much else you'd be able to diagnose but I appreciate the help anyway.

Wait scratch that, there were a couple different copies of the labels txt and once I got all of them it worked.

Yes, that's right. If you have the Steam (=multiplayer!) edition, then in any mod where you see similar labelling problems, the "Unknown" line will likely need to be added to that mod's labels.txt file to fix that problem.

(Or -- if the modmaker has been considerate enough to provide an already-edited file for Steam-based players, called e.g. "labels steam.txt" -- the "single-player" labels.txt will need to be deleted/renamed, and replaced accordingly with the fixed file)
