I think I posted my question in the wrong spot so I'll repost it here.

How hard is it for an experienced modder to make a mod that involved changing the techtree including names and descriptions, as well as modeling all new units?

Second question is how hard is it for someone without any experience modding to learn to do that stuff?

Thanks!

The question is very generic, so i can't really tell you "how hard" - it depends on complexity of your mod.

Generally just adding new stuff (Techs, Civs, Units) - without changing the underlieng mechanics - is rather staight-forward and usually quick XML editing.
And also quite easy to catch up on... Look for a tutorial on what you want to do (tutorial Index: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=236836).
Also downloading and checking out one or two "simple" example mods - say a single modular Civ - will help.

"Modeling all new units" is a somewhat wide field... There are different tools you might want or need to use.
Is no rocket science, and there are lots of good tutorials (usually coming with the software / or found on net, for a specific peace of software).

alright, thanks for the info!

I'll make my question a little more specific.

What I'm looking to do is to replace all the units ingame with Naruto themed units. We are thinking of having relativly few units, like maybe 15 or so because in naruto there are fairly few "types" of units.

Were thinking there will be a "Warrior Class" of Ninja and an "Archer Class" of Ninja.

The warrior would be the first one perhaps called a Genin Ninja or something like that. Then the Swordsman would be the Chunnin and then like the maceman would be the Jounin and we're debating making a Sanin Class too that would be really powerful and of course an ANBU unit.

I would also like to make new special hero units themed after characters.

If possible the promotions would somehow specialize the ninjas skills.

Of course I would want all these units totally remodeled to be themed toward the show. And reworking the Techtree.

The Techtree is one of my biggest problems cause I dont have the mind for it, I have no idea what tech should lead to what unit and whatnot.

So what would this entail and would it be practically impossible for someone like me with no experience in this kind of stuff whatso ever?

And what does remodeling a unit entail?

Thanks again, I hope this makes my question easier to answer.

Well, this is certainly a bigger project.

Still with some willingness to lern a a few tutorials the XML part of it shouldn't be a problem.

Start with something simple - like cleaning out the units you dont want and adding a couple of new ones. You should be able to get moving pretty fast, and you can catch up more as you go.

The artwork... 15 whole new "totally remodelled" units is a lot.

You might want to settle on lesser goals - like tking some already existing units, that seem appropriate. The Unit database here is huge, there must be at least something you can use as "start up"-art.

As you mod moves along - when you release first playable versions with "borrowed art" - if the mod is interesting and fun to play, you might attract some artists to help with relly unique stuff.

If you want to do it yourself. It's certainly a rewarding skill to learn. And - again - everyone who's relly willing to learn, can - there are no "big secrets" and with a few good tutorials you can get going and see first results pretty fast.

You know, if some talented Modder were to dig out TheLopez's Tech Tree Modifying Program and update it to BtS 3.17, it would make everyone's lives so much easier ;).

Aussie.
