Current estimates, Mig21:70 out of 159, Mig29: 24 to 30 (+12 allegedly on order from Russia), Mig 23ML/MLD 89 (all the older Mig23S have long been withdrawn)
Late Soviet Su 17 M3/M4 and Syrian Su 20 (export Su 17M). After the wars with Israel, Syria had about 70 Fitters. 20 Su20 and 50 Su 22 supposedly served in the SYAAF prior to the civil war, and despite losses their numbers have been bolstered by transfers from the Iranians (former Iraqi aircraft that fled during the first Gulf war). Take these numbers with a grain of salt. Being a dedicated fighter-bomber, it has suffered fewer casualties and is generally more successful than the Syrian Mig 21 and Mig23s. One was shot by a USN F18E last year.
The Peruvians received about 50 Fitters in the late 70s, quite active against Equador, all since retired. They got 24 Mig 29s as well as 18 Su25 from Belarus and Russia in the late 90s.
@techumseh You bet!
The rest of the fighter bombers and three more interceptors. The Mig27 was the specialized attack variant for the USSR and India that passed on some to Sri Lanka. Missing a handful of minor African users I can't find photos for.
Fixed the Algerian BN, added Uzbek, Zimbabwean, Ugandan (these two both ex-Libyan) Vietnamese and "Yemeni" aircraft.
The USSR supported the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen with Soviet Air Force MiG-23BN and MiG-25R based in Aden starting from the late Seventies. During the South Yemen Civil War in January 1986, the Soviet MiG-23BN fleet flew strikes in support of loyalist forces.It is not clear if these MiG-23 were ever transferred to the South Yemeni control and later to the unified Yemeni Air Force or they always remained under Soviet control and withdrew later.
Likewise it is written that Soviet crews flew Mig23 BN's with Afghan insignia in the 80s.
I haven't found pictures for any of these or the Namibian ones that definitely existed (ex-Angolan maybe?). Zambian, Somali and Sudanese Mig-23 BNs probably never did. Oh, and those Ivoirean MLDs fled to Togo a few years after delivery and were impounded there.
