Its been a while since I have been on this forum, between HOI3 FTM. I got a bit fed up with getting science victories and nothing much else(Prince Level). I have tried a variety of mods I thought would make the game more interesting, but in general I find that using these slow down the game, particularly turn times are around 45 seconds on large maps. now I have deleted all the mods I have used and back to vanilla and the game runs like a dream again, turn time around 10 seconds. Now my problem is being stuck with getting bored with vanilla and trying to gain another type of victory other than science. Tried being aggressive with larger army and run out of money mostly. I used to get points victories in Civ 4 but in 5 this is seems more difficult as the A1 tend to favour wonders.

Any thoughts?

It depends on the mod in question. Most mods don't affect turns times significantly, but there are a small number that attempt to alter the game's between-turn mechanisms enough to have a noticeable impact.

Additionally, it appears that the DX11 executable used when running a mod is not the same as the one used in vanilla, and the mod version is less optimized and more crash-prone. Someone discovered this by making a completely empty mod (doing absolutely nothing) and running it; the game ran noticeably slower and crashed much more often than in vanilla. This doesn't seem to happen in DX9, so if you don't really care about those extra graphical effects, you might find a noticeably better performance by running the DX9 executable instead.

Well, I only ever use DX9, as DV10/11 crashes. I try to avoid Mods now.

I'd say that's just more of a reason to avoid DX10/11, and play MORE mods, not less.

Without mods, Civ5 is pretty darn boring. It's way too easy, unless you crank up the difficulty so high that a "normal" playstyle is worthless. And you hit a point, usually near the start of the Industrial, where you've already won and it's all just mopping up. These are exactly why I created my own mods, and in the past nine months I think I've played a grand total of two games without significant content or balance mods.
