Mods do not work.

Every time I try to load a mod I download from here, it doesn't load properly. Sometimes (as with RoM AND), it just returns to the desktop and doesn't do anything, no matter how long I wait. With most mods though, it just loads vanilla BtS with the only difference being the "unload mod" option being available on the main menu.

Ages ago, I tried to play the Sengoku Jidai mod, but what happened there was quite strange. It was basically vanilla BtS except you could only load a scenario where you had to play as Tokugawa and you started with absolutely nothing, therefore losing instantly.

The built-in mods work fine but nothing else does. Anyone know what's causing this?

It's the "double folder" problem.
Check the mod folder. Normally there should be a folder called "Assets" in it, and maybe some other random stuff. That's how it should be. So you have Bts\Mods\Modname\Assets
In your case it sounds like there is in the mod folder another folder with the mod name, and in the second folder there is the "Assets" folder. So you have Bts\Mods\Modname\Modname\Assets . And that's wrong. You can just fix this by moving all the stuff from the second folder into the first folder.

All the things are unrelated to the "shuts down and never restarts" problem. No exact idea what's happening there, but it seems to be computer AND mod specific .

From the behavior you see with RoM, it could be due to not applying the 3.19 patch. Any mod that has a custom DLL which requires version 3.19 when you are not running v3.19 will typically just suddenly crash the program, returning you to the desktop with no warning or error.
