im using one of hers. She unplugged my computer (the stupid <snip>) & now it will not load properly. I can get to the desktop only half the time and when I do everything is unresponsive and the start menu is all black. Checkdisk gets stuck at 1%. the hard drive light is stuck but no weird noises. It was not like this before. what should I do?

\checkdisk just said some File Record Segments are unreadable. I
have trouble w/ the keyboard on this computer,....

edit: now its deleting index entries. I hpope my files didnt get damaged.

Edit : another edit can the unplug damage a hard drive .Stupid keyboard!

Im back on my computer. I noticed that some of the recently updated files, parts of them are missing, but nothing else seems to be wrong. The disk got extremely fragmented, though, like 40% of the system partition when before it was something like 2%.

I have a Western Digital drive. WDC WD5000AAKS-22A7B0 I will look up a diagnostic.

EDIT: this is it I think.

I suggest pulling as many important files off that thing as you can before it completely dies.

Then buy a new hard drive, it's cheaper than trying to get it fixed.

Im gonna do a full backup. Of course.

Folding@home now gave me a filesystem error. I am going to do another checkdisk and then run the diagnostic. I wanted to backup before doing the diagnostic and it turned out to take longer than i expected.

I ran chkdsk. It said it restored a missing file but nothing else unusual. But then when it rebooted it started again! So I rebooted the computer with the button and cancelled it.

Then I went to look up the endless looping thing in Firefox and it randomly disappeared and it popped up a box saying that there was no error log. I dont know if this is related, though. Maybe my computer has been possessed.

Im running the diagnostics thing now. The quick test says PASS and now I am running the extended one.

Still no weird noises -- just a lot of grinding.

EDIT: By the way, if it helps, I figured out where the chkdsk log is stored.

Spoiler :
Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is System.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.

Please wait while your computer restarts.

I didnt notice that BITMAP thing before.

Ive also just read that the endless looping means the filesystem is corrpted. Is this true?

The diagnostic says Bad sectors that may be correctable. I will try to correct them tomorrow as I am tired.

Just do a repair install of windows or go back to a previous restore point.

I will trya system resotre (I did a Windows Update the day before) and then a recovery install.

System Restore -- "unspecified error." I guess it got corrupted.
Couldnt do a repair install it was greyed out. So I tried uninstalling the service packs and eevrything started acting crazy (e.g. a dozen errors from various programs on bootup).

Would a clean install work?

I don't have the money for it.

A clean install should work assuming you have the disc.

It's a pain though.

Reinstalled fine. I did a format.

No problems yet.

My mom doesnt have admin rights. She didnt need them either. She unplugged the comptuer.
