Well I'm a new face on the block but I've monitored the forums for about... 2 years or so... finally joined :P

I'm one of those people that got Civ4 and thought it was good and all but preferred Civ 3 ultimately... so yeah.

Experience well, I've beaten Deity once (or twice I think?) but most of my games have been on Emperor or Demigod in general, for now... I was always a peaceful player so I've been learning to aggressively warmonger so I quickly dominate the world.

So yeah here goes:

Settings: Wet, Warm, 5 billion, All scientific AIs (8), Huge, No Barbarians, Least Aggressive, I'm playing as the Maya... Monarch level

I have no worries about winning this one, I don't have problems with Monarch level :)

I warm up Mapfinder and get a few starts with 1+ cattle and 1+ river tiles.. I go with the first and it seems to have turned out fairly well.

I quickly establish a 2 turn worker/4 turn settler factory in my capital, and the surrounding cities, lots with forest/bonus grassland and one with wheat, quickly expand my empire. It would have gone faster if I had more food bonuses but alas no.

I quickly hook up furs as my research progresses at 50 turn rate on Alphabet (gathering gold). I locate 6 or 7 gems in the north and find myself alone on a fairly large island that has every type of terrain but swamp or jungle? Odd.

Later, nothing much has happened, my curraghs found the Russians and Koreans on other islands and I made a few simple trades, selling off Writing and around 150 gold for a variety of techs from both of them.

At 1025bc Code of Laws is researched.

1000bc status:

21 cities
20 workers
3 warriors
3 curraghs
3 settlers
A few granaries in production as well as a warrior or two, rest on settlers/workers

Sorry no screenshots at the moment too busy playing :P But coming really soon.

I don't know how this one is gonna go. Whilest it is not a bad start by any means, it is not particularly fast either and I'll need a fast conquest phase off this rock if I mean to get any sort of good score.

EDIT: Well... BS.. I have neither iron or horses >.< And I dont see any close either. Koreans have 1 iron. Russians have zip. It's kinda hard to get a HoF game now.

Back to the drawing board then.

Oh my... 2 cattle on a river starting position... and as I explore I find I have 8 cattle within 12 squares out of my capital as well as 4 wheats within 20 squares. Also another river next to some of the wheat/cattle. Not all are on fresh water, but it still makes for a fast start. I put in granaries for many cities that were not even meant to be factories of any sort, just to produce greater output as time goes on... otherwise I'd say I'd have 31 or 32 cities and anyway I probably botched the start somewhat :P For the great start it was, I certainly didn't make the most out of it. However... it still has turned out good so far even with me messing up some of the MM of all the settler factories and also triggering a few disorders by not paying attention.

HOWEVER, all goes well in Maya-land.

Greeks are somewhere to far south, and I have 28 cities in 1000 BC with several more about to be built, and settlers and workers coming out of every which city... almost discovered Writing on min research so far (lots of gold).

My empire is about 6 times as large as Greece and I still have loads of land to my east (about enough to hold 25 cities), a bit of tundra to north, plains to south, grassland to east and northeast before the coast stops my expansion.

Screenshot soon.

@Superslug; can you confirm for me whether I will be a QM when the next update comes? (provided no one knocks off one of my current games) The suspense is killing me!

Thanks :)

Well, I have 61 cities in a Republic in 430 BC and nearly out of Ancient Era... (and in a few turns a bunch of workers will finish, getting me from like 50 to 60 workers).

Anyway, there's still plenty of room to expand for now. I wager 100 cities before I start truly clashing borders with anyone. I'm on this huge long snaky island I think... a few other civs on it I believe.

The only potential thing to slow down my score is that I only have one type of luxuries nearby, though looking at my neighbors (even though they are semi far away), I can see 3 more types of lux. Is this luxury situation a problem or not?

But I got a question which is: how do people take over the world so fast.. even with 'fast' units with 2 or 3 movement?

I'm a bit worried as I keep expanding.. I know before long I will have to start massing horseman and then upgrade to knights a bit later, then smash my forces on my enemies... without missing a beat, and I have no idea how to do it cause I've always been somewhat 'peaceful' in my games. It is Monarch level so it's not a situation of losing and not conquering the world, but more like how fast can I do it so as to enter milking faster.

I really hate milking, so when it came to getting my my histographic win for the QM I just played Tiny Chieftian until I got a continent to myself, when I irrigated the whole thing and put some coins on the enter key to make the game go with me doing anything.

Well now that's just a little off-topic.

It looks like you were just short one Pentathlon submission and a Histographic. If you've sent those in and they've been accepted, then you're in....(unless someone knocks off a current game, but that rarely happens these days).

EDIT: Okay, you did do histo. Pentathlon? (I know I could look it up, but I don't state details before publication.)

This might help: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/strategy/artillery_effective.php

Lots of good stuff in the War Academy. ;)

It would've been worse to start a completely new thread though ;)

And everything seems to be pointing towards me becoming a QM (unless I lose my only conquest/small game)

True. And maybe we're not completely off-topic mentioning the Challenge in front of Elear, maybe it'll inspire him to join the hunt. It's a misconception that you have to be a great player to try to become a Quartermaster, a lot of players become better players while becoming a Quartermaster.

Well, most players. I'm not sure about that guy that somehow perpetually stays at the very bottom of the list, he's not so good at it. Kind of sad really, he designed the Challenge, he should know it better than anyone else.

Still have a day to send in an "insurance" submission. Or even two, one small, one conquest. Worst comes to worst, there's an update every month. :)

Well, I'll be down there too (unless I can find enough almost empty tables Demi-God and lower)

I've certainly improved a lot via the HOF and by looking at games submitted for the HOF. (Haven't done the challenges yet.) By choosing my games carefully, I'm high up on the lists, though not as skilled as many who are lower down.

Okay, no one seems to have found this bit amusing (or didn't get it), so just to be crystal clear: I was making fun of myself.

Honestly, I'm impressed with anyone that has finished the Challenge. There's a reason why it's called the Challenge! And being anywhere on a list topped by Moonsinger is something to be proud of. :)

Maybe we can the mongols as honorary quartermasters, for the various ways they've screwed up your games?

And while you're making fun of yourself with that post, I think you'd get yourself off the bottom with a bit of effort. It just seems that your considerable efforts go into running this place, rather than improving your own scores. It's definitely appreciated. :goodjob:

(Channeling Curly) Hey, I resemble that remark! (turns channel)

I'm not a good player, but I stuck with it with the obsessed determination of someone who has no life other than play civ 3 all the time.

You do realize I have a banstick, don't you?

Do you just have no time to play CivIII anymore? or are you on CivIV?
I haven't even had time for IV lately. :(

Actually, I've thought it rather hilarious that I've had the bottom position for so long without actually falling off the list. I will get the bug to play III again someday. Maybe I should start Mapfinder now so I'll have a few hundred thousand iterations behind me, and maybe have a decent start when I'm ready. :)

Hear hear. I'd like to see you knock the dust off that "Dancing with the Devil" thread. And welcome to Elear ;).
