Monarch HOF Run (Maya)

That's a crazy map you've got there.

Domination limit is good. Can I ask what your current territory is?

Yeah.. it's a crazy sort of pangaea (for 60 percent).

In fact, it could even be archipelago.. I'll have to check sometime what my 'quick game' brings up. That would be crazier!

My territory is 28 percent
My population is 49 percent

Score is 4046 in 950 AD.

Main problem I've had so far is getting settlers to fill the territory quick, it's just so tough without railroad... oh well. I have a bunch of settlers nearly there

I'm kinda used to Emperor/Deity levels where you don't have to research things yourself really :P

EDIT: It's an archipelago 60 percent... go figure!

950 AD Interturn:

Suwon deposes to the Koreans... ironically their lose their other city on the same turn.
Babil deposes to the Sumerians.

960 AD:

Captured the Sumerian city of Babil.
Captured the German city of New Munich.
Only problem in Sumeria-land right now is that the entrance to Sumerian lands is rugged and hard to get across quickly... luckily, this area is not too large.

970 AD:

Captured the German city of New Leipzig.
Captured the German city of Leipzig 2.
Captured the German city of Berlin 2.
Captured the Korean city of Suwon. And go figure, there's a settler on a boat somewhere.
Captured the German city of New Bonn. (new luxury for me, furs)
Captured the Sumerian city of Susa.
Captured the Sumerian city of Zabalam. (this is their main saltpeter city AND a chokepoint onto the main Sumerian lands/core)

970 AD Interturn:

Lose a few cavalry to New Nuremberg ceding to the Germans.

980 AD:

Razed the German city of New Berlin.
Captured the German city of Salzburg.
Captured the German city of New Frankfurt.
Captured the German city of New Munich.
(getting a bit slow going, I send another 15 cavalry to the German front to try to get things to keep moving)

Pangaea maps rarely have Dom limit in excess of 3900; close to 4400 is good for an archipelago (sometimes they'll reach 4500+ but when I get those maps the start location usually turns out to be a Tundra island).

I'm getting a bit of a problem in the northern German front... I am pushing the attack with my armies and the troops I have, but if I keep capturing cities, ceasing with a number of troops (say 6 troops with 5 resisters) will start to kill the pace up there. Should I just risk the captured cities flipping back and press onward, continue to stop with a few troops to reduce the resistance, or just raze?

Thanks,
Elear

cities flipping back isn't a big issue. a few of them will, but they'll only have 1 + maybe a conscript rifle for you to take them again. Slowing the advance to beat down the resistance risks losing military to flips, and really drags out the war. The bigger danger is fast units taking one undefended city, then rolling down your railroads and taking more. That's one slight benefit to leaving railroads so late, it means they can't take more than a couple of cities. Quickest way to end all those resistance problems is to simply exterminate them. Press on, roll over them, and since you likely have a constant stream of troops heading to the front, any flips will be recaptured very quickly.

Thanks ... that's what I'll do.

Though, frankly, the thing about them doing the railroads thing is not an issue on Monarch level. Perhaps when I do a Demigod/Deity/Sid run, I'd be more concerned.

980 AD (continued):

Captured the Sumerian city of Kutha.
Captured the Sumerian city of Kua.
Captured the Sumerian city of Umma.

980 AD Interturn:

I lost... Zabalam. Culture flip to Sumerians. 4 elites, 7 veterans gone, poof. I thought it was safe just one more turn... Was resting them up one last group (since it had a barracks) before leaving Zabalam open. It's not a disaster but it still is sad :( I feel like a bad leader :( And of all cities to flip, my city with a dozen troops resting in it :/// I think it's teaching me a lesson why I shouldn't have ever tried to end resistances while pushing my attack :P

990 AD:

Captured the Sumerian city of Zabalam.
Captured the Sumerian city of Kutallu.
Captured the Sumerian city of Akshak.
Captured the Sumerian city of Erech.
Captured the Sumerian city of Kish.
Captured the Sumerian city of Dabrum.
Captured the German city of New Heidelberg. (second of three German irons)
Captured the German city of Brandenburg.

990 AD Interturn:

Pyongsong flips to the Koreans.
New Frankfurt flips to the Germans.

1000 AD:

Captured the German city of New Frankfurt.
Captured the Korean city of Pyongsong.
Captured the German city of New Cologne.
Captured the German city of Dortmund.
Captured the Sumerian city of Apisala.
Captured the Sumerian city of Anshan.
Captured the Sumerian city of Tutub.
Captured the Sumerian city of Nagsu.
Captured the Sumerian city of Der.
A victorous cavalry, Sanabas, has produced a great leader! He is made into an army at Kish.
Captured the Sumerian city of Agade.
Captured the Sumerian city of Kisurra.
Captured the German city of Munich.

Not a bad turn :P Nevertheless sure to lose a city or two to culture next turn...

(I am starting to gather newly built Cavalry on the border of Babylon, I have about 20, once I have 40, I will attack)

At 1000 AD...

--Greece destroyed
--Korea destroyed except for one boat/settler
--Germany half-destroyed
--Sumeria 5/6 destroyed
--Preparing to attack Russia as I finish up Sumeria... my troops need a few turns of rest and organization though... they are scattered and hurt
--Preparing to attack Babylon

For fun:

I have the armies of Kuningas, Moonsinger, AutomatedTeller, Bartleby, and a standard Elear, attacking the German front

I have the armies of Tone, Sanabas, Killercane, as well as two standard Elears, attacking the Sumerian front.

And two screenshots, which show the power graph (with score), as well as the Sumerian front (with minimap):

Well, what happens after this?

You can pretty much guess...

Well first off, RNG hates me because I just lost a cavalry army for no good reason, I was attacking a musketman in Sumeria's second to last city, and the Army of Killercane went at it, redlined the guy, and died.

My force is depleting way too quickly and cavalry from the core take about 6 or 7 turns to arrive and I'm worried  I lose cavalry for the stupidest reasons, up in Germany they frequently perish to spearmen.... And at this rate, I'll be able to take out Germany, Sumeria, Russia, and Babylon before my troops are in tatters... leaving Persia and Byzantine still on the map.

I guess we'll see but my morale is going down, I'm unable to keep a concentrated attack going anymore... I swear after I finish Sumeria I'm gonna sit there a few turns, and just group my troops together and make sure they are all at full strength.

Guess I need to  to the RPG gods more though...

Or maybe.. just maybe... in my attempt to be aggressive, I've become reckless with my troops...

EDIT: Well.. maybe I won't even make it, because my troop count just keeps falling and falling as Sumerian cities flip back constantly, muskets appear, and I lose cavalry fighting them.

And what's more, I don't think I can even win anymore... it's... I have no momentum and my army is falling apart only halfway through the conquest phase. I don't believe I can anymore because I've ran straight out of steam.

I believe I am going to put this one to rest :(... I'd love to continue and see where it goes, but it's depressing to play, knowing I screwed it up royally.

I know, I could still get a 3rd place speed domination victory on the monarch HoF tables, but... all the same....

I think a sign of this is that when I saved and exited the game, I actually felt relieved not to be playing it...

But in any case... I learnt a lot from this game.... if I had known some of the things I did at the end, at the beginning of my war, I would have done a lot better. So not really sad :)

Hopefully indeed :)

I wouldn't worry about what you are running into. You are going to lose *some* forces. A 3 cav army is, I think, 8/4.5/4, which means it's going to win 2/3 of the rounds vs. a musket. If the musket has 4 hp and the army has 12, then the musket has to win 12 rounds before the army wins 4 - that's not going to happen a lot, but it will happen.

I guess I'm saying don't worry about it. Set the game aside for a day or two, but go back to it - it doesnt' sound like you are making any big mistakes.

Might I say that a 10/16 cavalry army went to 0 after attacking a fortified musket?

And a 15/17 cavalry army went to 3/17 after a musket the next try? Those sort of losses screech my rampage to a halt.

But yeah I'm not going to do this again quite yet. I will be doing the month's Gauntlet first.

In fact, an army of vet cavs vs. a fortified vet musket will lose 1.6% of the time (assuming the army is 8 attack)

it the musket is in a city, though, that % jumps to about 5% of the time. Put that musket in a city and it's nearly 6% of the time.

make that vet elite and it's 10% of the time.

So don't stress about losing the army - it's not a sign that you are playing badly, it's a sign that things happen.

And if you are losing forces, it's not a sign that you playing badly, but that you are overextended. Regroup. You arent' even half way through the game, and you have over 1/2 the land. And once you get rails, your conquests will go much, much faster.

It may make sense to wipe out sumeria before stopping, though, since you are pretty close.

Alright I've tried to continue this game.

The state of things is thus:

My cavalry at the Babylonian border are attacking, starting to take Babylonian cities
The Germans are just about dead... a couple more cities
Heh... the Sumerians... that's the real problem... I am being beat by my own cities... they keep flipping on me, get a free veteran musket, and by the time I get some cavalry there, they rush another regular musket, and bang my cavalry start dying

And it's very annoying, I've had Sumeria down to 1 city, then they had 5, then 3, then 4, now it's 2 again.

However... it looks like I may be able to wipe out Sumeria in 2 turns as well as Germany, if I do it right.

EDIT: I read somewhere you should set aside a game for a week if you are getting annoyed with it, so that's what I'll do.

I've got some advice too, and it may sound strange from someone helping run a competition, but don't let yourself become so competive that you forget to have fun playing the game. Having the odd set back here or there during a game makes it a far more fun and interesting challenge. It's probably just that you know the game would have scored better if you didn't have that setup back that is annoying you.

Oh, and thanks for the writeups on this game, they've been fun to read :goodjob:.

...and I'll second that! This game is going somewhere so recharge those batteries and then get back on the case. I'll see you in a week then!

I agree, you are handily defeating the opponents. Just because you have loses doesn't mean the overall effort is a failure. I just lost a 4 unit cav army fortified in a town to a bunch of swordsmen. It is annoying as hell, but you recover. Later in the same game, I lost a modern armor to a Swiss Merc. Figure that one out.
