First I'll cover my game mechanics and AI issues, then on to my dissappointing scenario.

I find the way money works in Civ 3 to be kinda lame. My friend who had never played civ before realised that basically nothing seems to happen if you get yourself down to 0 gold and have a deficeit in this game. What the heck is with that? It seems very very odd! Why did they choose to have the game function in this way? Concidering how much more expensive it is to hurry things in this game compared to civ 2 I find it a strange choice.

Secondly Its seems like the AI, no matter what difficulty you play on, just tries to match your play. My same friend, who is just terrible, was in the late middle ages in 1920 ad or something, but the computer seems to be doing no better. I find this to be very odd indeed! Is the AI custom made to match your ability like this? Does it use your play to help it decide what to do?

Oh My! I thought I was good at this game ;)

Well i'm playing the greeks and started on a nice strech of plains. I wasted some time going down to get monarchy early (Civ 2 habit) but I made most fo that time back by setting my science nice and high and draining my reserve cash. After monarchy I raced down to theology pretty fast (I got monotheism for free being scientific).

I had been waiting for this moment by using what i call the Palace Trick, that is, building a palace which was one turn from being compeleted when I got theolgy so i'd be way into The sistene Chapel as soon as I got it.

Keep in mind I've gotten no wonders up to this point since the compter has manged to win every one, but I havn't been concentrating on that, i just REALLY wanted the sistene chapel :)

Despite this, just about 3 turns after i got Theology and was 10 or 11 turns from the sistene chapel (it was 560 ad) I see germany has build the thing already! Oh this was terribly dissapointing!! The thing is, even though I know germany is scientific as well, I find it really hard to believe that this could be possible without the computer resorting to the same 'trick' i used. I suppose its 'possible' given the turns i wasted going for Monarchy, but still. I am interested in some other people's opinions, was my game (my playing ability) atcually slow? IS the computer really THAT good? :crazyeyes

I look forward to your responces!

I really do think the computer is that good. I spent my first *4* games of Civ3 without being able to build a single wonder. Building an early lead is crucial, for if you get behind early you'll never catch up.

Having said that, in my two most recent games I've managed to build almost *all* the wonders (on Regent and Monarch level) after the ancient era. One city alone had 9 wonders, 2 small wonders, and singlehandedly built at least 3 spaceship components. :goodjob:

The first key is to build a tech lead (so you're the first to be able to build the wonder). The next seems to have one or two uber-production cities that build the bulk of your wonders. The palace trick is very nice, too. ;)
