Monarch too easy/Emporer too cheesy

Not trying to be contrary, but I've never played a Civilization game before Friday(though I have made up lost time by playing an embarrassing amount since that date :)

I am having a bit of the Civ doldrums as well. I bumped up to Noble and find the same patterns emerge. Build up my civ, have a border clash, declare war to get more space for more cities, build up tech...and by the time I'm halfway to defeating the nearest civilization I'm at double the score of the nearest civilization.

Granted, this is on the same average map type(continents, med size world, etc.) so my worries are probably premature, but I do think the AI is not very aggressive when it comes to what is slowly becoming an overwhelming force(that's me). Especially when every civ is annoyed with me and I have shown myself to attack with little provocation. I'm basically a bad person ;)

Personally, I don't feel I should have to handicap myself(forcing myself to put cities in bad locations, not researching certain techs, etc..)
I don't really have that much self control :) and besides I feel the AI/Game should scale to provide these challenges on it's own.

Please note: I'm not trying to rant or beat on the game. These are just my experiences based upon the limited time I've had with the game so far. I'm assuming that with different settings/available mods this game will stretch it's legs and then my flailing social life will truly be snuffed out for good.

cheers,

-J

Kinda my feeling as well, but at prince level.
The solution as I see it is simple.

There is allready "-1 you attacked our friend".

But what about :
"-1 We feel threatened by your agressive expansion."
that you should get for every couple of cities you invade.
Maybe per 3 cities on small maps, per 4 at medium maps etc.
And this should add to all your diplomatic relations,
including thoes you haven't meet. Maybe it should fade with time also.
