For my first game I decided to play as montezuma marathon/monarch difficulty 18 civs huge earth map and kill everything that moved. 3700 BC I found an english scout so i started right then and there. Luckily I started in Iran which is about perfect surroundings to have everyone dogpile and "destroy my unhappy city state".
At one point I was at war with every civ in eurasica which is exactly what I wanted.
The culture is insane from slaughtering thousands of helpless warriors and archers with heavily promoted units. Heavily promoted units shine so hard in this game and with the early double experience I've managed to get several units above 750 exp each. In fact a single strike group consisting of 1 division of crossbow, longsword, and horseman was able to conquer the vast expanse of Africa, while my main army simultaneously conquered the english greek and roman civilizations. Sadly the horseman was lost due to a sudden emergence of pikemen, but his death was avenged.

Finally won the domination in only 10 hours total. My starting jaguar survived to the end and had 1617 total experience prior the capturing the last capital as a rifleman.

When you say "win" do you mean "overpowered" or "good/fun" ?

And how are the Jaguars?

Wow, sounds really good. I've expected that Monti would be an incredible leader in civ 5.
Interesting, that this worked on monarch. Is it because the AI does not understand war battles and can easily be beaten?

Jaguars are excellent for farming culture against barbarians, since they produce 2 culture for every victory and heal 2 hit points every time they defeat a unit--keeping them about 50% more active than standard warriors (if the average wound to heal is 4 hit point, and you defeat a unit about every two turns).

After this stage their bonuses diminish, but this healing property continues to make for good mop up units while your swordsmen and horsemen, forming the majority of your army, are breaking the lines.

If you promote them the healing and jungle defense bonuses persist, which is nice. If you're very rich you can find yourself in midgame with a melee corps that heals ~50% faster.

What is the culture gain based on? Is it a flat amount per kill, does it raise based on the unit doing the killing, or does it raise based on the unit killed?

Great questions. If only we had documentation. Unfortunately the manual and civiilopedia are woefully inadequate.

I've noticed it's basically 2 culture per kill. Sometimes it's 3 though, and I haven't played enough to discern when.

Yeah documentation sucks but it's easy enough to load a game in the future era, play with quick settings, and run some tests. I'll do it tonight if someone doesn't beat me to it.

FYI, build a ton of jags either way because they keep the UU promotions even when they are promoted up the chain.

Final answer is it depends on the unit killed.

Mechanized infantry killing mechanized infantry: 25 culture
Mechanized infantry killing anti-gun: 16 culture
Paratrooper killing anti-tank gun: 16 culture
