My first victory in Master of Orion.
Ok, that was just the "simple" difficulty :D , that's just a small sized universe, and there were just 3 opponents (Klackons, Bulrathis and Sakkras) , but as it is the 4th day i am learning how to play that game (i was surprised how much different it is from my favorite Master of Orion 2) , after all those quick crushing repeated defeats, i am an happy old guy now :)

Here is an AAR of what happened for those interested.

The story begins
In the beginning, my Darlocks were lucky enough to have several system in their range, from the starmap it seems that i was really in the most interesting position.
So very early i was able to climb in a dominating position, and could advance in both tech level and fleet amount in front of the other forces in the map.

But, after i met the other races , things got a bit more difficult, as they were not really happy because my spies were just stealing technologies after technologies from their labs.

And here comes the war
At some point, an open war was declared but fortunately my early advance in tech and power was enough to allow me to resist, and with the results of my spies work, i could build more powerfull warships.

But after one of my task forces conquered a Klackon system with some losses, a Bulrathi fleet , with 2 hundred of fighters attacked.
And despite my warships were at a higher tech, the number was enough in this battle, despite very heavy losses that swarm of fighters destroyed my wounded strike fleet (i think i should have retreated, i always forget that).

Smaller is better
So i changed plans, and using my weaponry advances, i designed a nice little fighter , and modified the order to build heavy cruisers from the systems shipyards to get these good fighters.
Oh joy when i discovered than instead of waiting +/- 8 years to get 5 heavy cruisers, in a same year i was able to get more than 3 hundred of those killer bees.

This certainly helped to open the way to the 2nd fleet, as no enemy forces were able to stop the advance of the joint 2nd fleet and the swarm of killer bees.
Nice idea, as there were several colony ships ready, that took over the devastated systems from the Klackons and Sakkras, while the Bulrathis was always in a safe position and fortunately made peace with me.

The fragile peace
Then , during a century, the Darlock positions were consolidated, some strong battleships appeared in their fleets, forcing some minor attempts from the Klackons and the Sakkras to come back to fail.

After a while, the Bulrathis that i neglected were furious again, i imagine they caught some spies, as my spying army was always giving every techs from all the races present in the universe with an incredible success.

They came to me, and i succeeded to resist, but as the Klackons and the Sakkras were always angry with my spying technique, i lost a system to an overwhelming amount of successive fleet, while i was a bit busy trying to built huge waships.

The universal chaos
Fortunately, my basic position, with all their systems was always safe, and a resuce fleet was able to stop any attacks, that i noticed were less and less numerous.
I imagine, maybe because several of my recent technologies and sabotage missions were successfull enough to allow me to let the victim think it was another one that was responsible :)

So i was not the only target from now, as the war became global.

The Klackons defeats
Aftet resisting a lot of elections , thanks to my amount of vote (i had more systems than the other races) that allowed me to block the election of those Bulrathis (the Klackons and Sakkras seemed to love these guys despite the war), i began to notice that the Klackon empire, the closest one from my empire was going through several system losses.
It was my bigger spy victim too (i can't count how many time i let the Bulrathis and Sakkras to think the responsible were the Klackons), so this may be understandable.

Well, that was increasing a bit too much the amount of votes of my enemies, and i decided to make my move and , now that my propulsions system were very advanced, to attack both Sakkras and Bulrathis homeworlds.

Propanganda wars
A very important sabotage campaign from my great spies gave lots of trouble to my targets, lots of false accusations were made thanks to the Darlock experts spies.
And without anymore defense bases, the enemy systems seemed helpless with their few defenders, while the big fleets were away, thinking they were fighting the good enemy.
They were in fact opening the back of their empires to the Darlock fleet

The burned worlds
My huge warship helped by heavy cruisers and fighters swarm crushed some enemy systems in the way burning them without any assault transport, and i ended by annhililating both Bulrathis and Sakkras homeworlds, but not without lots of losses in my fleet.
Several colony ships achieved to make me the master of 2/3 of the universe when they arrived in the now empty systems, followed by some population transport to help the population growth.

And after several peace treaties - declaration of wars, i finally ended in peace with the near to be crushed Bulrathis and the now weak Klackons.

The rise of the Sakkras
The Sakkras that succeeded a big hit in the Klackon empire, taking several systems became annoying for me, and despite i had destroyed his homeworld , his systems were always relatively numerous.
He may have became again a threat, not only because his technology was very high and his fleets very big, but as everyone hated the Darlocks after the spying campaigns, i would be in another difficult position for the next votes.

Unusual Alliance
Surprisingly, the Bulrathis asked me for an Alliance, followed a year after by the Klackons.
The benevolents ;) Darlocks accepted, as these shadows of their former selves could be always be crushed later.

So while i was able to gather the remains of my glorious conqueror fleets, and reinforced them with some more waships, a war between the powerfull Sakkra s and my allies was ravaging the other part of the universe.

The fall of the Bulrathis
After i launched the main "attack" task force against an away Sakkras system, i was told that the Bulrathis presence had been annihilated from the universe.
It seems the Sakkras was getting the upper hand (not surprising though, as the Klackons and Bulrathi were nearly defeated when they asked for an Alliance), but the complete destruction of my allies was not really a good new.

The Sakkra system that was on my way became an empty world after the intense planetary bombardment of my fleet, opening it to one of my colony ship.

Democracy for the victory
It was time for election, and after the Klackons voted for me (good guys) , the Sakkras voted for themselves.
And it was there that my vote decided finally of the outcome : the Darlocks were now leading, and i was elected as the ruler of this universe.

Isn't that a good fellow ?

Well, i will try now the other difficult level, but as i was totally crushed in all my previous games, i can't imagine how hard it will be for a beginner like me.

I have not met Orion in that game, despite it was the longer one i played , usually i discover Orion quickly (but before being crushed by the other AI, i was never in a tech position high enough to attack the Guardian).

Master of Orion seems to be a very interesting game, i can't believe i missed it all those years, i am a long time addict to Master of Orion 2 (even if i am not good at all even at this one).
What i appreciate is that Moo1 plays differently and seems as good as Moo2, not better, not worse, but different and that's a good thing.

Nice story. Both games are high on my list and I try to play them at least once a month.

Before you move up, play with the full number of races and see how that goes. If that works out, then move up. If that is a big struggle, try medium maps.

Well, i think i will stay a bit longer in the "simple" difficulty, i will try with a bit more opponents as you suggested.

My first "easy" level game was the quickest defeat i ever had.

Trying again the Darlock, i appeared in what is certainly the less interesting spot in the universe, only 2 planets under the range of a colony ship , one of them was a 50 population one and the other was Orion.

So after colonising the first one , and losing a scout ship in Orion, only one system (30 population poor place) was reachable with a colony ship, i sent a scout there, and 2 years after an enemy Klackon scout was present and ran away when it encountered my own recon ship.

After several years and exploration, a colony ship arrived and colonised this system.

Offended by my spying (maybe i should have waited before opening the spy door), the Klackon declared war against me.
I built some small ships as quickly as i could and sent them to the poor system, as it was the door to my homeworld.
When they arrived, i had the bad luck to face a stronger fleet with even more small ships that destroyed me and invaded on the 1st attempt the planet (as their ground troops were a bit more advanced than my defenders).

I hoped to build a bit more, but the Klackons decided to not wait and attacked directly the second planet near Orion and my homeworld.

Without any kind of defense, they destroyed it quickly because the population was not very numerous(as i had sent previously a transport to re-inforce the poorest planet, but it was of course destroyed by the orbit ennemy fleet when the planet fell)

So with only my homeworld left, a Klackon refusing a cease fire, and without any decent defense, i prefered to resign.

Well, back to learn the game a bit more in "simple" difficulty (can't imagine what Impossible looks like ;))
Despite the amount of defeats i am facing , i really appreciate this game.

Impossible on a small map is often a chore, but I had an easy time of my last one.

Anyway the thing is to get familiar with the races and the tech. Klacs are a top production race and that means they will be able to crank out ships.

Once you had an attack you needed to get some defense at home.

Start by set all research off. Send out you colony to the nears star and if you have choices go for the yellow one. send out your scouts. Build factories until the colony ship makes a new colony.

If you have stars in range and not covered by a scout, immediately design a new scout, same as the starting one. Make a couple and send them out.

If you find you have contacts, try to make trade, failing that start a missile base, if they are in range of you. Look to design a fighter with nothing but a gun. Well if you can fit in a battle comp and not drive the cost up much.

The thing is you do not want to spend 6bc for it, if it could be 3bc. Start making 1 or 2 every turn.

Once you have a second planet, send over some colonist. Send as many as you can without either dropping below 30-50% or sending so many you cannot work all the factories.

Soon you will want to put some research into range and planetology. Do not try to do everything at once. Not even a single click into the other stuff, just to see what is coming.

Well that is enough to start off.

Thank you for these advices, i can see already several things i am doing wrongly in the beginning, that was "forgiven" just because the difficulty was in the lower part, but no surprise the defeats are complete in higher levels.

That should be very helpfull while i am learning a bit more the game concepts and will help me to improve my strategy.

Thanks again, i appreciate the hints.
