I had read in the FAQ about a bug whereby, if the space crystal / amoeba attacked your colony on Orion itself, you would get to fight the Guardian instead. In that recounting of the bug, the player lost (not expecting the Guardian), so the bug report ended there.
I had basically won the game by this point, so I sent in a fleet that was total overkill -- 1000 ships, 6 stellar converters each, 10000 damage on the first turn, etc. Turns out things get even weirder if you win. Not only did I get several random "you beat the Guardian!" techs (again!), but the crystal wasn't actually defeated! It wiped out the colonists, even though my fleet was still in orbit with it.
I sent transports in and got the "ground combat" music but "new colony" animation, as usual for retaking 0-population colonies. Interestingly, the crystal didn't prevent troop landings like it usually does for a few turns. And then I got this oddity:
Wacky!
Sorry if this is old news, but it made me laugh. And made me happy, too, since I got some techs that I was never going to get otherwise.
