More convenient rotational camera (POLL)

Would you prefer a camera view that doesn't auto-resets itself after letting go of Alt?

  • Yes, we need an updated rotational camera. Camera rotation in Civ VI was too much of a hassle.

It seems rotational camera view is unchanged and works just as it worked in Civilization VI. In order to rotate the camera, you had to press Alt and move the mouse, but the moment you unpressed Alt, the view reset automatically. This made the rotation very difficult to operate, and you practically couldn't enjoy different angles of wonders, units, terrain etc. Does anyone else want a better camera view that can stay stationary on a specific angle without the need to keep a button pressed, and the reset to happen with more control on the player's part at the press of a button instead? Allowing free movement when the angle of view is rotated would be a nice addition too because the camera stayed in place when you rotated it.

Here's proof that Civilization VII uses the same dysfunctional camera view:

How about a third Poll Option:

I never used any camera rotation in Civ VI and don't plan to use any in Civ VII since so far I have had no problem seeing everything I need to see in all the released videos. I therefore don't give a Rat's Donkey what kind of rotation the game winds up with. . . .

When I saw the devs rotating the in-game camera, my first thought was "oh, yeah, Civ6 had that." If they removed the rotation from the game, my gameplay experience would be completely unaffected.
If only the poll had an option for me to actually express this opinion...

Are people trying to make the most biased poll answers possible? Why not just have an option that says "I disagree with OP because I'm a big dumb-dumb" at this point.
I mean, no matter how you look at it, the camera rotation in Civilization VI is atrocious. Basically, it forces you to keep a button pressed if you want to rotate the view and automatically resets to the default view after your finger gets tired of pressing Alt. So I imagined that most people would have wanted an improved version because they would have hated how it worked in the past, but I was wrong I guess.

I added a third neutral option that can be picked by those that don't even care if the feature exists in the game.

That's my point. You imagined that people either agreed with you or were stupid. Not only is that a terrible lack of imagination, and close to an insult, but why even start a poll in the first place if you don't consider the possibility that people might have other opinions? That's not a poll, it's a cry for validation.
I'm sorry, but where exactly did you see that I presumed that people are stupid? By adding the word inconvenient? The rotation of the camera is inconvenient to use, even if someone liked using it. Polls are meant to give a message and let people express their opinion, and I don't think this poll is any different. No one is forced to pick a choice they don't want. If I wanted that, there won't have been a second choice in the first place.

Again no insults were made, If it is insulting to some people, then a Moderator has my permission to remove the word "inconvenient" from the second option. Also, I never made this poll in order to cry for validation. From the very first moment I have participated in this forum, my intention was always to offer interesting suggestions that will make the game as successful and brilliant as none other in the series. If Firaxis wants to consider my suggestions or not, it's their choice, and I would never make a poll to force my opinion on others.

I mean as someone who has literally never used it despite knowing it exists, couldn't the use of it be made a toggle instead of a hold to clean the feel of it up?
That's pretty much what I'm suggesting, and a little bit of freedom of movement when the view is rotated. You will press Alt and V in order to get to rotation mode. The angle of view will be rotated by the mouse wheel or Q and E. And of course you will be able to reset to default view by pressing Alt and V again. The movement of the camera should also be allowed when in rotation mode, unlike Civilization VI. If you want to an example and are a fan of other strategy games, think of how freely the campaign map is rotated in Total War games.

The poll is invalid. The final option MUST be "Banana ".

Poll lacks "banana" option and a "there was camera control in Civ6?" options to be valid. :shifty:

I wouldn't call Civ6 camera "inconvenient", quite the opposite. The game should have default angle and return to it automatically. All games with free camera I've played make it very confusing.

This. The automatic return prevents the situation that you hit some random keys, the camera shifts and you have no idea how to get it back to normal.

Have you played Total War games where the camera is rotated in any angle you want by just pressing Q and E? That's what I would call convenient.

Yes, but Total War games are totally different as they are split between tactical part where free camera rotation is really useful and strategic map, which is static across all games (and fits real world map for their historical games) so it's much harder to get lost. And even with this, I found it pretty uncomfortable when I rotate campaign map camera in those games - the view stops matching my in-brain map representation.

I honestly either completely forgot or never knew you could rotate the camera.
I'm fairly sure i've actually thought about wishing I could see a different angle sometimes and shruged it off.

With the new Marquette style I absolutely want to rotate around and see things from other angles. I just want a really quick and obvious "Re-centre" UI button so I don't have to dig the manual to find out how to fix it again.

I never discovered the camera rotation functionality in Civ VI. I figured it was like all the other Civ games (except Civ IV if you knew the right key combinations, where you could view the map from nearly any angle) and there was just one view and zoom.

Now I'm wondering if I also missed camera rotation functionality in Civ V.

I've never missed it, but if it's going to exist, it makes me wonder how to make it more discoverable while not being overly in-your-face about "hey, you can rotate the map! try it now!". I suppose Millennia's tutorial-during-the-first-game overlay worked fairly well for introducing features, and maybe the Civ VI advisors would have told me about it (I turned them off quickly as I was tired of them talking to me every turn; Millennia's equivalent doesn't have audio, and has diagrams showing what it is explaining, which is more my preferred style of learning).
