More generic Scout skin

Often, when i played one of the 'western' nations like Spain, England, etc, i got annoyed by the dark-skinned Indians as scouts. I mean, since I explore manually, i see them quite a lot. Nothing rascists or anything, Ijust don't think indians fit with every nation. So that's why I decided to make my first skin ever, a more generic version of the Scout.

Old version;

Sadly, i couldn't remove the feathers as they're part of the model.

Now, i know it's not the most perfect skin ever made and i don't expect anyone to actually use it :p I just thought I'd share my skin and hopefully reseive some constructive critisism to improve further attempts at skinning. :)

EDIT: to install the skin, unzip to ...My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/CustomAssets/art/units/scout ;)
EDIT2: Added the '/scout' directory to the install path I wrote down in this post.

Nice job, this irritates me every time, too.
Can you make the feathers transluscent/transparent?

Hmm, don't know if that'll work. I don't even know if transparency is accepted in .dds format or if they even used a transparent model to begin with.

I can try though. :)

Tried it, didn't work. It seems to be part of the model and I can't edit that. On top of that, the feathers are colored in your national color anyway, so it doesn't even matter much if you edit the texture.

besides, the feathers are a nice touch. :p Nothing too weird about that. Ancient civilizations often used feathers for decorative purposes, not just the Indians. :)

Neat, I'm going to use it :), I normally play as a European civ myself.

Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to use these skins?

Just unzip them in;

...My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/CustomAssets/art/units/scout

If the 'art' and 'units' directories don't exist yet, just make them ;) Once unzipped, start up the game and enjoy!

And I'm pleasantly surprised people like this skin. Must've been better then I myself thought. :D

Didn't work Tremo, I would have expected someone to sticky some general information by now.

Nice idea, but if you replace the old scout, then it will look strange for the Mongolian, Incan, Mayan civilizations, etc. Nothing you could do about that, though. Great job on the skin

Whats so strange about it? It's generic. It has no distinctive features. Sure, it has a bit lighter skintone, but thats hardly anything worth mentioning. And a grey vest isn't exactly something that they couldn't possibly wear.

Couldn't the 'generic' scout be used as a unique unit for the European nations? Then you could still leave the indians for the rest...

What I really don't get: When they use nation colors on specific parts of the model anyway, would it have been too much to be asked for if they had given the different civs the correct skin tone? I mean, it's basically the same thing and would add much to the atmosphere.

Nice job on the skin, really.

Can't you make the feathers transparent so they wouldn't be visible even if they are in the model? Or does Civ4 support transparent colors?

Currently we can't change the *.nif files, and adding transparency to the feathers will not solve that issue, I belive *.dds files work with a white background... "I'm not totaly 100% on that.

Yeah, it sort of gave me pause when I was playing Russia and here I was with these shirtless scouts and warriors running around the tundra in the early game. Seemed a little, uh, chilly.

It doesn't, there is no transparency on skins (a black alpha layer is used as the Civ color for skins, but used for transparency for button icons).
