More of a Modification question..

Is it possible to modify the units for the standard game, not a scenario. For example, I'd like to change the settler, spy, infantry & etc units to better versions I've found online.

I attempted to just copy & paste the news ones over the old ones, but the game gave me some error message when I tried to start it up.

I have the classic version, not Gold. Do I need some sort of utility program to accomplish this?

Any help at all is greatly appreciated. I've played Civ2 off and on since the late 90's, but all I've been able to figure out modification-wise is the rules.txt file. :crazyeye:

Actually you can get the copy & paste work with MS Paint if you use units.bmp file.. As I see it is quite the same if you use units.bmp or units.gif when you play.. And this way you'll even have real fast way to change the units you use..

Thanks for the responses..

I have a copy of Civ-Gold on the way, so hopefully I will be able to use MS-Paint to copy/paste with that version. I would download Paint Shop Pro, but I'm on dialup, and don't have the patience to wait that long.

Finally I'll be able to play all those cool scenarios that only work with Gold. :)

If you have the XP version of MS Paint, I think it can deal with the GIF87a non-interlaced. Open an existing units file, copy & paste, then click "save".

At least this is what I've been doing all these years (even with classic I think)...

If you're on a Mac, I suggest earlier versions of GraphicsConverter. 3.8 something I think. Simply edit the Gif, run it through a gif-pict converter you can download and put it in the game.
