More speculation on Civ3 Conquests

In light of the recent article referenced on the main site, it would appear that Conquests will contain all the new stuff that PtW originally contained, as well as all the other stuff planned for Conquests. This means that if there is ever going to be a Mac port, they only have to do the one game, right? I realize the code work will still be the same, but there only has to be one release, which is probably a lot more economically friendly in our Mac world. With all the new stuff planned for Conquests, plus all the changes made to PtW, that would be a bargain for whatever it would cost to buy. Maybe that's why Westlake has held off on doing the expansion up until now...they are planning a simultaneous release with Conquest!!! Or, maybe at the very least, release it at the same delay we had for the original game (however many months that frustrating period lasted).

I have no facts to back any of this up...as the title says, it's all speculation on my part. I just wanted to throw that out there, and get some feedback on the plausibility of my reasoning. Whatever happens, I for one will be thinking a little more positive for the time being, until someone comes in here and positively tells us otherwise.

I hope so much it could be true... but as I tend to beleive in that sort of situation... Trying is the first step toward failure...

K-Man, I'd put money on it that you're right. I bet that Macsoft are already putting money on it. You could/would imagine that Brad -- once he's put HALO to bed + several other projects -- could do the port in his sleep.

Conquests looks to be the best of current scenario develpment with a few goodies added and there doesn't appear -- to my non-techies eyes, anyway -- too much Mac-specific code.

Ah, it's easy to say. However, MacSoft have to get Neverwinter Nights and Halo out and maybe Age of Mythology and Rise of Nations? Could be a great decade for strategy gamers. A Mac 'Conquests Gold Edition' (PTW elements + Conquests + Editor and patch parity) would give the folks at Macsoft an opportunity to fully the realise the Civ franchise. IMHO ...

One of the best reasons to be optimistic about a Conquests port may be that it will be SP, and so may not require some of the MS-proprietary coding that made PTW near-impossible to port. (Keep in mind that this is the deduction of a non-techie.)

There is nothing about PTW that makes it near-impossible to port. Having cross-platform gameplay with the PC, that's near-impossible, but if you wanted to just play other Mac players it's not a big deal.

FWIW, Conquests also includes multiplayer support, a superset of PTW from what I understand. (If someone knows what is in PTW that isn't in Conquests, I'd be interested in knowing as I haven't been following the feature sets of the two all that closely.)

Actually, I'm fascinated to hear a definitive answer to this as well. At first I thought it was MP that was missing, but there was a clarification today or yesterday that MP is in as well -- is Conquests a replacement for PTW, with additional stuff?

That's what it is beginning to sound like to me. When I heard the clarification that MP would be included I began to wonder what was in PTW that wasn't going to be in Conquests.

Now, does this mean that he hasn't been following the feature sets of PtW because he knew he'd only be porting Conquests, so he didn't bother to look at the sets for PtW? Or does it mean that he hasn't been following the feature sets for either because he hasn't been granted permission to start porting either one? Sorry, there I go speculating again :D I'm still thinking positive that it's the first reason, and that sometime in the near future we will be getting an announcement that Civ3 Conquests will be coming to the Mac. One thing's for sure...with all the evidence that Conquests contains all that PtW does and more, I can say for the first time that I do not want PtW for the Mac, as that will now be a big waste of their production dollar. I'll wait the extra couple months if it means we get to have Conquests for the Mac, and all the trimmings that come with it!!!
