Emperor
Below Emperor I can cruise, mess up, blunder and still win
Above Emperor I have to start MM'ing to win, so it takes more time and concentration

Emperor appears to be just the right mix of autopilot and attention to detail at the right time...

My point exactly. The higher the level, the fewer the possibilities. That's a shame. Higher levels should require a better use of all game components; instead of that, most of the time you find yourself relying on the military aspect only, because that's the only area where you can still compete with the AI.

Hmm, I don't find that to be true, exactly. I can win pretty much however I want providing I get a good start and don't get crushed early. When I say I'm more restricted on Deity, I mean more like what I said in my first post. I don't feel comfortable letting myself fall behind in tech. I wouldn't dream of an archer rush. I don't try weird things that I might try on lower levels -- things that might work out brilliantly but might also fail. That sort of thing.

I'm with the crowd, Emperor. Although I'm getting better and starting to enjoy demigod, which I would now put second.

Breunor

It has to be deity. The AI actually makes a game of it, and it requires some skill and thought to win. Second would be demi-god, as it is not too far off deity. SID, I am sure is a huge blast when you finally win, but getting there is draining to say the least. Anything below demi-god is pretty much in the bag before you start.

Monarch for me. I can stop paying attention for a while, get lost, then decide to get it in gear and climb up the ladder. That gives it a historical feel, like nations that stagnate and then rise up again.

i voted regent, but monarch is just as good, i like it because its still easy, The AI isnt insane (war all the time and hate you to death) but they do attack (i hate it on cheiftain when they never attack each other)

I'd have to agree with the poster above me. I play Regent (everything random including starting Civ), and can generally win 9/10's of the games I play, although I still find those games enjoyable. I still consider myself a n00b though, especially with the more advanced techniques (stuff most of you probably take for granted, such as settler factories). ;)

I vote for Regent although I think it is time for a more thorough attempt at Monarch. Personally, I find the lower levels are absolutely no fun, due to them being too easy.

In the odd occasion that I have played Monarch and Emperor diff's, the game has started me on a very small island (Pangaea map!!!!), by myself, and by the time I can acquire Map Making, the other civ's are ready to kick my ass, and generally will ...

Emporer, I guess. Monarch is too easy. DG is still a bit too tense for me with all the mm and trading that needs to go on.

I voted for Monarch even though lately I have been playing Regent. :crazyeye:

Regent has just gotten too easy for me. But that is probably why I have gotten bored and bought another game. On monarch I actually feel threatened by the AI. I probably could beat emperor, but I probably wouldn't have much fun because of micromanagement. Once I pick up Civ again I should go back to Monarch.

i have to agree with the general consensus: for me, regent and monarch are the most fun levels to play. simply because you don't have to MM or really pay much attention to the small details while the AI can provide a bit of opposition. playing on monarch gives me the chance to use most of the features of the game. conquering diety in vanilla was fun but it took two weeks of living civ and tediously monitoring absolutely everything. so these days i stick to having fun! :goodjob:

I like to relax and play at my own speed, so I usually play regent or monarch, with an occasional warlord thrown in when I want an easy win. Though once on warlord I got stuck in an unwinnable situation because the computer became just far too strong. One civ was the most advanced and was beating me in the race to build a spaceship (They had over 50k gold in the treasury!), and when I declared war to take them down a peg, they got the largest civ (they controlled two whole continents!) to declare war on me.

Needless to say I was overrun, I lost my source of oil which meant I immediately lost my ability to make advanced units, and at that point I pretty much gave up, realizing I couldn't win by conquering or science, and I couldn't steal tech because I didn't have enough money. Oh well, the computer can still surprise you on the easy levels.
