most historically incorrect movie!

Someone already beat me up on this, but when I watched Braveheart I was stupefied and asking to myself: "Where the hell is the bridge?!?!" Or: "Am I missing something about this french princess?!"

Well, she did exist, and it was important to have her in the movie because Sophie Marceau is EXTREMELY hot. But the thought that several English monarchs were really descended from Scots (over and above the British monarchs who were really Scots) was just too silly for words.

Wow, quite the China-Burma-India brat's club we have going here! I'll pass on the same thanks to your ancestors, Joespaniel.

I am proud of our history. I bid the same to you and your family.

Joe, I'm in Toronto, although of Brit parentage, FYI... ;)

Ah, I will be there Sunday night. I live in Milwaukee, and have vacation all through next week.
I didnt get a passport in time to go to Ireland, to visit relatives there (yes, I am a mutt: German-Polish-Irish  ).
Next spring maybe...

So I am going to Toronto for some R&R!
I will try to PM you when I get there, and the first round is on me if you are so inclined.

But no need to quibble; we seem to agree that Malaya took it before dawn. Just waiting for AoA to say "oh" now...

Fat chance of that.
Everyone had the right idea, just off on exact timing. Ofcourse I redily admit my source could be wrong too (2194 Days of War).
It was a dark day for the people of many coutries, not just the US.

You're welcome :D. I'm not sure exactly what my grandfather was. He was a leftenant that was semi-promoted to captain during the war (he was still young then). The battalion/platoon that went to Singapore was mostly destroyed and those that returned suffered from phycological damage. There was a man my grandfather knew who almost went crazy. I can't remember the exact details. Some people he knew were killed as prisoners by the Japanese.

I am proud of our history. I bid the same to you and your family.
And so am I of my family's history. And likewise. :)

One horrible historical movie I saw was some Genghis Khan movie played by John Wayne. A really horrible movie. I never liked Wayne anyhow. There have been many totally historically incorrect movies, although I don't remember all of them. :king:

Pocahontas.

You can't beat Disney in historical inaccuracy. These are the people who wanted to build a amusement park on the grounds of the Battles of Bull Run (Manassas).

Note: While I'll admitt that Gettysburg rocks... the casting person must have been smoking something to pick Martian Sheen (who is latino) to play Lee. Denzil Washington would have been about as realistic. I love Sheen as president in "West Wing" (American TV drama) but not as a Virgina elite... or Boston blueblood for that matter (he played JFK once).

Red Dawn :p

There actually *IS* some historical realism to it.

The replica of a Soviet T-72 used in the movie was so convincing that two agents from the CIA started asking where the studio got it from.

Not only that, but former Secretary of State, Al Haig, said that Red Dawn was "...is one of the most realistic and provocative films that I have ever seen..."

I guess Tom Clancy was right. The difference between fiction and fact is that fiction has to make sense

DAMN!!!

It's canadian thanksgiving this weekend, so I'm in Niagara on the Lake for a traditional thanksgiving thing with my girlfriend's mother and the Shaw Festival. Long story.

I will watch for your PM, though; I think we're back on Monday but if not I will definitely do my best to show you around... do PM anyway so if I get it in time I can send some recommendations that will suit your tastes.

P.S. God, I was referring, of course, to the grandfather who shot down japanese planes in my thanks above. The air supply/cover literally did keep my grandfather and the rest of the pocket alive. But I'm sure plinking iraqi rebels contributed somehow as well; :D.

He played RFK in 'The Missiles of October'.

As to most inaccurate - Braveheart, 'The Norsemen', 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' and many others. Dishonourable mention to 'The Green Berets' with John Wayne, for being so bad it is funny.

I'll be there most of the week. Most hotels have internet now, so I'll try after Monday.

Who else from CFC lives up there? Have you met anybody?

Just remembered another really bad one, "The Vikings" starring Kirk Douglas, Ernest Borgnine, and..Tony Curtis?!!

(All three played vikings, oddly enough, in a very bazar story).

RMS, just cos they got a realistic prop....................

It is like condoning Commando as a film because they gave Arnie a realistic looking Colt m4

"Where is Singora? I don't know of any such town in M'sia."

IIRC it is just across the border in Thailand, near the 2nd narrowest part of the penensula.

Yes, but I think I saw somewhere that she was 10 years old or something. Of course, some things were different in those days...

Back in 1969, Hollywood made a film called "Krakatoa, East of Java", starring Maximilian Schell & Diane Baker, which was about the famous 1883 volcanic eruption.

....er....Krakatoa (nowadays called the island of Krakatau) lies WEST of Java! :crazyeye:

Must have been a hell of an explosion. :o ;)

the question is..........was this terrible history-incorrect changes necesary to make the movie better? or the movie could had been as good if it was accurate. like saving private ryan or those movies?

I didn't get this about SPV: how was Matt Damon able to recollect memories he didn't have, i.e. scences before Hanks met Damon?

Saving Private Ryan was a good movie, I liked it alot.

It was a fictional story set in historic settings, and did justice to that history by portraying those scenes with respect, and without politicizing or trying to otherwise make a statement.

Other than that war sucks.
