So of the leaders in Civ VI, who has the most interesting or fun mechanics and gameplay, whether it's leader ability, civ ability, or unique units or buildings?

I think Maori’s design was a stroke of genius.
I consider GS to be some of the peak of civ designs.
Besides the Maori, Sweden comes with their own World Congress competition, the Inca can work mountain tiles, Ottomans are the only one with a unique governor, and Phoenicia can change their capital with a city project.

For the Maori, my concern iis that (as far as I know) they're OP on any island map, and not on underpowered on larger continent maps like continent or pangea. Is there a map that's balanced for them, so naval power matters, but not so much that they have a huge advantage?

Inland Sea, perhaps? The map is pretty much the same all the time, just with different wiggly bits around the edge of the water. They would still have to use land forces for the Civs that start further out from the sea, but they could flourish quite nicely. Added bonus they won't settle on some two-tile chunk of tundra crap near the poles either.

I actually really like inland sea, I'll try this out. I stated a game with fractal.

As for my answer, I realliy find Ambiorix of the Gauls to be interesting and fun to play, and also enjoy Basil a lot, but I'm not sure he counts as the most mecahncially interesting, I love the idea of religion supporting warfare.

Canada is fun, though very easy given its abilities. (And placing Ottawa 2 tiles north or south of Eyjafjallajökull is heavenly bliss). Babylon, though, must be the most interesting, with its unique mechanics.

As a new player, of the ones I've played, I think my favorite is the Aztecs.

The extra amenities and combat strength from luxuries in your territory encourages wide empires, but also makes it extra-useful to settle near luxuries that you lack, rather than just accumulating extras of what you have and trading for them. Being able to speed up Districts with builders can be extra-powerful with the civics that give builders extra charges, and I found it to be quite handy for building many Spaceports quickly in the late stages of the game and denying my rivals any hope of winning the Space Race. And the Eagle Warrior is a great unique unit that is cheap, maintenance free, and can remain relevant for a long time, as well as making early expansion easier.

The Tlachtli unique building? I might have built one of them. But everything else was cool, so I still like them.

Haven't played the Maori yet, but they're my across-the-straits neighbors in my current game, and have denounced me. Thankfully, other than a short area, there's an ocean separating our lands, so I can just focus a few ships on that area, and not have to worry about anything until the ocean-travel tech... oh... wait... they can travel across oceans from day 1? This doesn't sound good... :hide:

I don't like Maori for islands play but I love them for their production output and the porn yield that comes with sanctuary district.

Maori is very good to play with sanctuary districts as it maximizes the yield of virgin adjacent hexes (no builds, no chopping) stacking with this civ's bonus yields on virgin hexes. Result bountifull tantalising yield porn:D

Oh, I assumed it was a typo, not jargon or slang. My bad!

The Maori are most fun not just because of the ocean stuff, but playing like a nature/no-chopping game. Kind of like Bull Moose Teddy going down the appeal route to get some fun yields.

Babylon is fun because you can hop around and get like modern era techs super early. Balanced? No, and at some point things catch up to you. But they're another civ that basically completely makes you do a 180 in how you play the game compared to a traditional game.

I've never been huge on Maori since I don't normally play a culture game. And I love chopping things anyways. And AI Maori is just annoying, I usually take him out of the game along with Curtain and Babylon.

I like the adjacency leaders. Germany and Japan in particular. Mali can be challenging, but rewarding.

With the right map Eleanor is pretty cool. But she can be pretty map dependent. I was able to take over an entire continent with her one game, very rewarding. I believe I had cultural victory disabled for that, because it does take a while.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I personally find the leader and civ design in 6 to be really intersting, and I think it's turning into my favorite in the series because of it, despite the notoriously bad AI (Hey, I cant' even win on emperor yet, so the AI being bad isnt' a problem for me). I think Hamurabi is my favorite so far, I just love the game of trying to get as many Eurekas as possible, and love how many strategies for victory he has.
I also like Asterix Ambiorix a lot, and Basil. I'm currently trying to learn Khmer, who seems fun to me as well.

Playing with the Norwegian whilst having vanilla (now called Konge with Leader Pass dlc) Harald Hardrada in a islands/small continents maps also makes for a fun start, as every melee naval units from the very start have the pillage ability good for destroying AI economy or just hunting for barbarian naval camps.
You should give a try playing with Heroes & Legends, Secret Societies and Monopolies and Corporations game modes, these always make every CIV6 session more fun for me:lol:

I came here to say Maori, and pleasantly surprised to see it get a lot of talk.

Coming from Civ V, when I started Civ VI I didn't really like ANY of the civs. My favorite was China, but I didn't like them....I just disliked them less than all the others. They had a few fun perks but nothing major.

Then when Maori came out, I was hooked. I just absolutely love playing them, and it's basically the only civ I play now.

I like playing the "small continents" map, surprised not to see it mentioned here. Just a bunch of decent-sized islands but nothing too major. You can often find your own island or share with just 1 other person as Maori and it's pretty fun! You can also always put all your cities on very small islands if you want but yeah.

I've never been huge on Maori since I don't normally play a culture game.

Well you're in luck because Maori just might be the best civ in the game for diplomatic victory, on multiple occasions I've got a victory the moment I built the State of Liberty.
And on that note, I think Maori is one of the best contenders for building the Statue of Liberty the fastest. I've done it before turn 170 a couple times I believe (on normal speed).
