Most (& Least) Important Resources

Whale = worst I have built 1 in all my games, absolutely pointless.

Coal = most vital No industial revolution without it. Has caused me to go to war more often than oil.

Grains = Best For the food & health

Best:
#1: Copper. By far. Axemen and phalanx / spears are very important early in game.
#2: Ivory. Get teh elefants moving NOW!
#3: Horses early - Oil late
Least:
#1: Whale. Whales are so remote I've never used them.
#2: Furs. Screw furs, they're always in Louis XIV's tundra.
#3: Gems. I never have them and they're always in jungles - manned by dozens of Aztec Jaguars.

1. Copper - early axes = toasted neighbours , quick boost to early production
2. Iron and horses - depending on your civs. Too many UU require them. Playing Romans w/o iron or Persian w/o horses you might want to restart
3. Flood plain gold or grassland gem = early tech lead, the much needed early happiness source, double happiness from forges
4. non-calender food resources - production from slavery, GP farm
5. Coal, oil, aluminum - critical, but usually not an issue as by the time my empire should be big enough to have them.

Most useless:

1. Whales - it's just crxp
2. Incense - who came up with the silly idea incense must be produced in desert?
3. Silver and fur - you see tons of money lying everywhere, but nobody want to work in tundra.

i played an OCC game once where i had no ponies, but i did have elephants, so i didn't worry about it. i had copper, and there was iron not in my city cross but within my borders soon enough.

fast forward ... turned out i had no oil. there was uranium one tile outside my legendary culture expansion, but cities don't ever expand farther than legendary even if they get 50 gazillion culture, so i had no uranium. it just sat there teasing me. as OCC i had no way to expand my land and get other resources except in trades. i had one opponent left. i was at war with him, and for some reason he didn't want to trade with me, go figure :crazyeye:.

it was hysterical. when i learned industrialism i couldn't even make jumbos any more! my final attack force consisted of mech infantry, artillery, marines, and left over jumbos that went over to him on slow-as-molasses galleons since i couldn't make transports. or gunships. or destroyers. or tanks. or planes. basically all the things i'm used to making if the game goes that long! i'd simply never realized how many things need oil, since i'd never been in a situation where it was literally impossible for me to get any before that game *giggle*.

but still, the most frustrating for me is overall is coal. it's the only strategic resource that's been completely absent on the continent i started on. more than once. which really does not please me. yeah so i really only need it for railroads and coal plants. but i like railroads! i liked the cute straight railroads in civ2 better tho. these newfangled windy ones look weird to me.
