Most memorable unit in the civ series

You know, I was thinking about this thread today and it occured to me that for myself Civ 4 units will probably start appearing here sooner then I thought. And Its becasue of multiplayer... I mean, In civ 1-3 it was all good and dandy to use conquest strats and have your fav unit obliterate your enemies.... But in civ 4 MP, wars are so intense and strategic..... Its no longer about "pwning" the opposition but engageing in desperate battles where the fate of your whole civilization hangs in the balance...

I have come to love the civ 4 archer... Slave rushing armies of them have saved my ass a number of time already... and hopeing that first strike is used makes the combat round oh so intense...

Interesting is the fact that most players love units of the first civ game they played. My first Civ was Civ III and so for me it's the spearman in that game.

It's a fact too that most players that played Since Civ 1 or 2, don't realy enjoy Civ 4 now.

arf
i can only speak for myselft as i don't know what's the matter in every player's life. what i can say is quite simple:
you're totally wrong deo!

i played civ1, 2, 3 and now i play cIV and i do enjoy the 4th version a lot!
i think each time we've played a new civilization game it was better than the older one.
most of us were kids when we played civ1 and teenagers when we played civ2... at this time games haven't to be pretty well balanced because we didn't care about issues like "destroying all AI with a single and simple tactic"
(the most valuable sample i can remember is the use of spies in civ2: eco money and buy all towns around regardless of their size... simple!)
now we're older and kids know how to deal with video games better than we did in the past thus games are becoming more and more complex to please a maximum of potential customers.

the thing is we can't play and dream as we did before but...
definitly...
cIV rocks!!!!!!!

a civ fan since the begining :goodjob:

Perhaps:) . I have nothing to complain about civ 4 but i remember when Civ 4 came out, many players were disapointed about it, opening many threads complaining that isn't fun etc.

From SMAX, that Ogre-thingie or how it was called... it came in 3 power levels and could only be gotten through a goodie hut (now how were those things called in SMAC? i only remember they looked like very flat soupbowls), unless you were one of the Aliens, who began with a lvl 1 Ogre. It was very powerful, but couldnt be repaired.

Even though i played SMAC probably a gazillion times, i never, ever got a lvl 3 Ogre... but i guess it must have been one heck of a unit. :)

Civ 1: settler/worker wagon
A settler that makes it's own road!

colonization: criminal (immigrant)
Give them weapons, kill some inca, get gold and professional soldiers in return!

smac: super fungicidal fusion rover former MK2
With a name like that, you can't go wrong... terraform up anyone?

Civ 3: Javelin thrower
Instant golden age, cool attack animation, 33% chance of slave worker.

Civ 4: War elephant
So cute! They rule the classic age. I just wish they had a "charge" attack where they would just trample enemy units...

I didn't start playing Civ II until college (1998, IIRC), so it wasn't just a childhood fanatsy of mine. I remember when Civ III came out I hated it at first. It wasn't until a year later that I finally started playing that game a lot. I couldn't believe that you had to build seperate settlers and workers, and I couldn't stand that you couldn't keep your entire army in your opponents lands and keep them alive. So when cIV came out, I retained an open mind and tried (and still try) to ignore my Civ III tendensies. So I've been with the series for a while, and I enjoy cIV a lot.

My favorite unit is from the first game I played, though. The settlers that acted like workers. Splitting them up into two units completely destroyed the way I played the game. And I remember winning in Domination on the Earth map and I kept playing. I RR the entire world, and turned every bit of ground into grassland. Soon the world population was so high pollution and ice melting were happening every turn.

Civ 2 Barbarian Leader. The slippery bastard was so hard to catch once you killed his onterage

 so true, I'd forgotten completely about those :)

My most memorable unit...hmm I'd probably agree with the Civ II engineer as they were so useful being able to terraform everything in sight and all. The Alpine troops were cool as well, very 007-esque ;)

Civ II: Ah man so many...gotta go with the god-like spy. She could do EVERYTHING back then...bribe, sabotage, nuke. I remember beating deity by just RUSHING the top civ with so many spies that I nuked every one of his cities with them. Makes me cry to compare them to current spy

CivIII: Panzer. I remember shooting straight for them and just rolling the other civs on my continent, thinking "cool, im living a WWII sim"

CivIV: So far for most memorable I'd have to say...great artist. I remember one fight I was in where I took over a city deep in enemy territory. I knew the culture war would be against me, so I culture bombed with William Shakespeare. I said to my friend sitting nearby "*talking over a static intercom* deploy shakespeare, REPEAT deploy shakespeare"

I couldn't agree with you more, Kernok.

But for a most memorable unit, I'm thinking back to the Civ II Howitzer. As others have mentioned above, a few of those suckers and it was strictly mopping-up time.

(...on the other hand, and I know some will disagree with me, mopping-up time was incredibly tedious. Remember? Midnight, you've basically already won, you have to work in the morning, but first you have to spend three more hours repeatedly throwing howitzers at the last 35 enemy cities? One of the great innovations of III was the domination victory.)

I like the Diplomat from 1, the Panzer from 3 and the Panzer in 4.
OPh, if we're going bage then, yeah the Dip was the ultimate unit in 1. In 2, the paratroopers and helicopters. Why because they we're weird. In 3 the panzer. :smoke:

Civ I, diplomat > buying up whole continents is fun
Civ II, spy > buying up whole continents is fun
SMAC, no unit, the game wasn't that special to me, but the quotes coming out of my speakers at new technologies were unrivaled.
Civ III, advisors > "Let's do lunch, sir" (or was that II?)
Civ IV, undecided
