I think the problem with this poll is that some people are treating it as a "if all these superpowers fought each other who would win,"

Which is rediculuos (spelt very badly *sigh*)!

What is wanted is the Superpowers military might over its peers.

Now seeing as any war with America is going to involve nukes on both sides (i.e. USA vs Russia). Everyone loses. (as the Cold war illustrated, we have reached the Great leveler. All nations CAN be equal. (military capabilities wise). The way America beat USSR, was that the USSR's Economy was, rubbish.

Sorry i just find it hard to beleive that 48 people can reliably say that if the USA fought a country with nukes (basically the 2nd tier nations economicly) and say they would not Draw. That they would win.
 
Against any non nuculear power yes. But any western european nation, China, india pakistan, isreal or Russia. America could never fight and win only draw.

I think if there was a united Earth Goverment America would not rule it :rolleyes: i think the capital would be more in a Europe then any where else...I sometimes forget how cocky us Americans can be :sad: When will we learn we ARE NOT the center of the Earth and the World DOES not Revolve(SP) around us.

I think he's right. The world revolves around us/US in the sense that we are a nation existing beyond geography, a nation built upon an idea and existing in the hopes and aspirations of all freedom loving people.

If you do not fight for your place in the world, then you will be trampled on by those who do. The US, ceasing its military operations today will not suddenly bring an end to war. If the US swore off war forever, today, we would only be a victim of it tomorrow. To think otherwise is utter foolishness.

I think you owe your children better than to be butchered by those who "would" take control of this supposed future world government. To do such a thing would be to hand them a level of faith which you or I would be ill-suited to do. I would rather trust my children to head that government and live my life with the example that all people, regardless of race, religion, or previous national allegiance, can exercise their constitutional rights and determine their own future.
 
I agree with Aleph-Null. In essence, the world DOES revolve around the US. Thats not to be taken as arrogantly, but merely truth. The world revolved around the British empire in it's hayday.

American culture and economics have permeated themselves throughout the world. The largest companies are still, by and large, American, and it is mostly American companies investing into foriegn nations, creating thousands of jobs for said nations. America's reach, though not always the direct reach of the American government, stretches itself through most if not all nations of the world.

EDIT:

If the US were to suddenly withdraw its troops from all parts of the world, imagine the chaos..

To get back to topic:

My favorite army has got to be either Napoleon's Grande Armee or the Imperial German army of 1870-1914, but my vote for most powerful goes to America.

Amen to that.

I can do nothing but laugh at this redicilious poll: it appears to be nothing but a demonstration of American nationalism and patriotism! Patriotism in itself isn't a bad thing, it's just not suitable in a situation where history is to be looked objectively.

You are absolutely correct. History is to be looked at objectively through the eyes of an American Patriot.

But that's just how Americans see themselves and their nation. It doesn't apply outside the US. Insulation isn't insight.:p

Walk a mile in someone else's shoes... (well, try imagining it at least) ...and you'll find that things look different. What you just stated about the US can be, and often is said, about a lot of other nations.

The Chinese have quite a high regard for their contribution to world civilization. Try France, almost a US twin in it's view of itself as making a special contribution for universal humanity. The Russians will astound you at times when tell you what an extremely positive force for good their nation is. Even itty, bitty Scandinavian countries have oversized egos, maintaining they they alone have dicovered the key to The Good Life For All.
I.e. everyone is as big headed as the US, and not a whit inclined to buy the US self-hype.

It's just the Germans who after a century of beating has been forced to conclude that German 'Kultur' wasn't the panacea against all the ills of Anglosaxon and French liberalism and capitalism many of them thought. Instead it got implicated in the creation of a peculiar kind of hell.

If the US is more powerful, it mainly shows up in its insulated self-image. Which isn't necessarily a good thing. You get less of a reality check, and at the point where you start believing your own propaganda, you're in trouble. :mischief:

No matter how hard anyone tries to have an 'intellectual' viewpoint on history it will always be subjective and not objective. A good reason is because a lot of our values are socially constructed.
