Mountain ranges too important?

It seems that holy sites and campuses are the most important districts early on.
Culture may come from monuments, and gold/production is not that hard to get. But Faith and Science are hard to come by without their respective districts.

That said, do you think that not starting near mountains sets you back too much? Forest/Jungle adjacency seems rather weak. And creating districts without bonus is really hurtful considering they get expensive so fast.

Shouldn't woods and rainforests give the full adjacency bonus for those ever-important districts?
It would provide more options/more varied strategies and help against excessive chopping.

I'm on a map currently with almost no mountains near me at all and I haven't felt it to be an issue, doing much better than my previous games.

The adjacency bonus for mountains is more of an early game thing to compensate you for the lack of a tile (and synergies) you would be able to use later on.
Being able to properly pack districts is actually a much more important thing - I'd actually prefer to start in a flat area instead of one interrupted by mountains.

On top of that, I don't think that a Campus or Holy Site is actually that important.
After a few games my go-to strategy is to build basic buildings and units early on and start with Commerce Districts instead (followed by Industrial ones).
Way better at boosting your cities because you get plenty of extra F and P from the trade routes.

I do not understand the importance of mountains. +2-3 science for 2-3 useless tiles late game is a pretty nasty trade off imo.

I don't care much about mountains either. Except for Galileo, but he can go anywhere on the map.

If the mountains are positioned right (4 tiles away from the city), it can be +science with no downside.

I don't think Holy Sites are really that important for most games, by the way. Sure they come early, but Campuses, Industrial Zones, Commercial Hubs, Harbors, and even Theaters are all higher priority most of the time, I think.

Thanks for the input, seems I really overestimated them.
BTW, I just remembered that the holy site adjacency doesn't increase your great prophet points, therefore it's not .essential for successfully founding a religion

The best campus tile I've found was in this neat little spot where Mountains ringed the empty tile on 5 sides, so I got a nice +5 on it. But yeah, mostly I found that I didn't need to care for the +2, +3 bonuses. Didn't impact my game that much tbh.

Production is so much more important overall right now, I find it drives everything else. So give me a river with wooded hills and I am a happy man.
