i am not sure this has been reported yet, i tried looking thru the past few pages, no dice, and cant search so ill ask in a thread:

whennever i roll over a unit/menu option/terrain/whatever, sometimes the <rollover> information pops up nicely at the bottom left corner. however, sometimes it does not. at times it seems the rollover information never comes back until i quit the game and run it again.

so has this been reported? if not i will try to give more information. anyways thats really the only issue beyond sometimes when i go to save my game i cannot rename it? like it doesnt recognize me typing or deleting the name of the save. maybe thats related to this issue? oh and also the map view is screwy when i zoom out all the way.

anyways hopefully all that is fixed but just letting someone know in case theres not already been a report of this. thanks.

Yes, it's been reported before (though I don't blame you for not finding the relevant thread), and I have the same problem (I sort of had the impression that everyone does, actually). I guess it's something that should be added to the Bug Reports Center thread.

yes
indeed.
:)

DOES everyone have the problem? do people just not notice? or is it NOT universal that the mouseover help disappears for a turn or three?

Annoying the hell out of me as well, but looking through the threads here I suppose I should be grateful that it's the most I can complain about.

Anyway, I have a workaround, that works for me anyway:

When your tooltips disappear, go into a city screen (any city) and come out of it, and the tooltips should be back. No need to quit the game or wait a few turns for them to come back by themselves.

The exception here is where you get the Next Research box at the start of a turn, and the tooltips are gone. The game won't let you proceed until you've chosen another tech, which without the tooltips is a bit hit & miss for me at the moment in this still-new game. Of course you can select any tech, then go and change it oin the same turn after perfrming the city-screen workaround fix, but still.... If the missing tooltips bug isn't fixed in the upcoming patch I'll be disappointed and surprised.

This was especially cool in the first couple of games where after building one of the wonders (The Oracle?) you got a free tech. Normally you can see how "expensive" they are (i.e. the number of beakers they need) so you can easily choose the one that needs the most. When this bug occurs you don't and basically have to guess. Yes that's right, I took fishing as my free tech instead of one which needed something like 20 times as much beakers.

Yeah, this is happening too. I've almost forgotten. I've placed this issue quite far down on the priority scale in favor of stability issues.

Later!

I've noticed an intermittent rollover problem and have discovered what the cause is in my case; it's because I turned on 'right click menu' in the options. Once I turned this off the rollovers now seem to be OK again. :goodjob:

The functions affected by having 'right click menu' on were things like:

- rollover information on the build orders screen
- rollovers in the city menu screen
- rollovers in civlopedia and tech tree (clicking on icons in tech tree didn't work either)
- relations information when talking to other civ leaders (they would pop up, asking for something, and I had no way of seeing the relations score with them)
- when a new tech is discovered, the icons at the bottom of the popup screen (e.g. new units now available to you) not displaying a description or further information.

...sometimes these things worked, sometimes they didn't. When they were not working it was usually possible to get most of them back again by momentarily doing something else e.g. with the build order info popup not working; by going to examine city (rollovers still not working here either) then exiting to the build orders again... this had the effect of restoring the rollovers everywhere again, for a while, until it happened again.

All a bit annoying until the penny dropped and I realised that this started happening after I enabled the right-click menu. Now that that is switched off everything seems to be working OK again but I do miss the right click, it was useful.

This may not be the same problem some of you are having but worth mentioning in case it's helpful to someone else.

you're absolutely right - enabling "right click menu" in the options screen causes this bug.

Two things I found useful with 'right-click' enabled were:

- when sending a unit somewhere it would tell you how many turns it would take to arrive at that tile... useful to know before executing that command, especially over long distances

- when clicking on a stack of units you got a popup showing all units + brief info on their strength etc. You could then pick the exact unit you needed from the list.
NB. I think there may be an alternative way of doing something similar but I've forgotten how to do it now.

I can live without these things, having a properly working mouse rollover is more useful to me, so I have the right-click option disabled now.

Thanks Velvet-Glove

The right click option seems to me pretty important. I looked it up, and the only other way to do the things right-click does is with keyboard commands, and I don't like using the keyboard commands. I hope this will be addressed in the patch so that I can have my rightclick AND rollover popups.

Steve2000, I really don't know if this bug affects everybody - you could always try enabling this option and seeing what happens. If you are a bug victim you will almost certainly discover this within 2 or 3 turns in which case you can just switch it off again. Might be worth a try.

I too would like both and hope the developers are aware of this issue now and will fix it in a forthcoming patch.

should be fixed by a patch, no right-click menu is not really a solution.

right click lets you select a unit from a city or stack.
the default mouse behaviour in civIV is brain-damaged and only fit for console games.

Agreed - I would have assumed that rightclick menu should be default, and you could turn it off - not the other way around!!! Pretty stupid if you ask me.

oh wait....
not console.

there's going to be a mac version.

I find the rollover info problem quite annoying - futhermore, I have experienced that rollover info was shown when pointing at some buildings in the city screen, but not when pointing at others - very strange.

The connection of this bug to whether or not the right-click option is checked or unchecked doesn't seem to be strictly the case - for me anyway. I've had the right-click menu on since my first game, and experienced the disappearance of the rollover info in random bursts ever since. Sometimes I can go whole sessions of play without the bug appearing at all; other times - most times - I get it every few turns, and have to go quickly in and out of a city screen to rectify matters. It's a minor but nevertheless niggling - and needless - inconvenience. The right-click menu is too useful to me (selecting units from a stack for just one thing) to disable it. I did disable it, briefly, to see if the rollovers stabilised, but yet again they didn't, so back came the right-click option. I expect the rollover bug will be fixed in the very first patch, whenever that comes along. As can be seen from the manual, the rollover advice is meant to be at the core of Civ4's interface. It's a little embarrassing for them, I think, for something so basic to be so intermittent.

I have also noticed that when the pop ups go missing, I cannot write anything in multiplayer chat

I´ll try today in our multiplayer to switch off the right click menu, see if it helps.

Same problem here. Got a work around that works for me at least.

ALT+TAB to your desktop then back to Civ. Hey presto roll overs back.
