Hi,

I'm a newbie to Civ V.

How do I get people to another island? Can I use a Trireme?

What's the first ship I can build to move people off my island?

How do I guard my cities? The seem to suck in my Warriors?

How do I upgrade my Warriors?

I loved Civ IV, I'm just trying to figure out Civ V.

Thank you,
Rosy

You need to research Navigation, I think it is. This will give your new units an "Embark" ability, which means they can sail across coast tiles. There are no transport ships in Civ V. I recommend you check out the ingame help files, which should explain it.

You can only fortify a single military unit inside a city, but the best way to defend it would be to move defensive military units between your city and the invading army. A good defense, is a good offense.

Warriors can be upgraded to Swordsman once you've discovered Iron Working.

Edit: I won.

* The units can "Embark" which means they can move over water like a workboat with the proper technology. You only need trireme to defend them.
* They just move themselves
* They guard themselves, and you're allowed to fortify them with ONE unit. The rest must guard the outside.
* When you have reached a unit you can upgrade them to, just make them start their turn iside a city and you will see the upgrade option.

With the discovery of Optics, all units are able to 'embark' onto the water. To gain this ability, units exploring must return to your land. Units out exploring will not be able to do so automatically.

Cities have a ranged attack. So can defend themselves from 1-2 enemy units.

How do I upgrade my Warriors?
When able, you'll see a symbol with a star on it on the left side with other unit orders.

Once you research optics, all your land units that are within your cultural border will gain the ability to summon their own little transport boats, just move them onto a coastal water tile. Once you research astronomy, they can cross deep ocean tiles in the same way. You can't use a trireme to transport units, but you can use it to protect them by patrolling the route with it.

The best early way to guard your cities is putting an archer in them (and a trireme in coastal cities) so you can fire at attacking units more than once. Don't send a melee unit after the enemy unless it can win the fight.

You upgrade units by clicking the upgrade button at the left, it only appears when you *can* upgrade the unit you have selected, though. The unit also needs to be inside your cultural border.
