You assume that the Sex Pistols were actually capable of explaining their government's policies and advocating feasible alternatives.

I believe he is saying that you are thinking the Sex Pistols are smart when they don't seem to be smart by the clothing they are wearing.
Not quite what he said, but then that is what happens when you have to explain it another way. :)

I was saying that a band like the Sex Pistols were more interested in shocking people than giving political commentary. He probably realised the consequences of wearing that t-shirt and gave no heed to the political ramifications, not seeking to make a statement other than "Look at me, I'm the wild man of music". I doubt that he went along to neo-Nazi rallies of any kind but also that he went to meetings of the Communist party either. The political position was probably attributed to the band through someone's interpretation of their actions, rather than by them walking round with copies of Mao's little red book or Marx and Engels' Communist Manifesto.

Marilyn Manson is the king of shocking the world. But I find that plain stupid. Why on Earth would you want to shock people in the first place?

By the way, I'm never shocked. Manson can do whatever wants to, but he only disappoints me more and more. It's too bad cos his music is actually kind of cool. He's the only artist I don't listen to just because of his behavior.

Nazi regalia was very popular in the 70's for it's 'shock' value, particularly with many punk bands, but it was used extensively by all, really. See David Bowie's alleged Nazi salute, etc.

There isn't anything deeply political there.

oh i see.

*scratches head* it sounds pretty stupid. :D

sure do things to shock people, but do something that you like.

The Sex Pistols lacked any sense of politics, and indeed any sense at all.
McLaren dressed them up in whatever would shock; they had no conception or idea of their own. A bunch of silly little children with filthy mouths and bad attitudes.
In the good old days, they would have either been 'disappeared', or sent to the gulag.

The Clash were political, but the Sex Pistols were just a bunch of talentless, addled louts.

Anyway, must be off to supervise the boy polishing my jackboots, whilst I fit my monocle, and don my dashing black uniform, with cap c0cked at an appropriately jaunty angle.;)

Its just for shock value. Look whos wearing it! Sid Vicious. Why he was in the band I don't know other than Glenn Matlcok being completely unbearable.
Who cares what Sid does? He died because he let some sadistic woman drag him down into smack addiction.
John Lydon was the only real important Sex Pistol. He definately has a brain and is the only reason why I hold the Pistols in such high esteem. If it wasn't for John's attitude/personal politics I wouldn't give a damn about rehashed Pete Townshend power-chord riffs.

oh i see. I have not lost faith in punk then.

Still, the sex pistols were a f*cking great band, sux to see that they are just as manufactured as the spice girls.

John was not. McLaren was just the manager and takes too much credit.
