[MULTI] Something bugs in Spain

A bit more about Q3. Yes some of us are almost ancient friends. Never met but played a lot. It started about a decade ago with EU2. Our MP were gigantic, at the best we had 20 players. Tzaari is my old rival from EU2-times. For some reason we always are against each other...

And sorry! No update from me. This is the darkest hour and most likely I will not survive until end of the game. However next update will be very dramatic and intresting in next week. I dont want to split my doomed war in two chapters.

I will ask him

And about where to find civ5 mp game. Sign into paradox forum and there go to ot forum -> civ5 thread. They are recruiting there so it is a good place to start.

And about this forum. Really people, why are you so silent? Over 1200 view and still most of messages are made by me and tzaari. I initially thought civfanatic would be a cool forum because it is the main civilization forum but how wrong I was. It makes me feel I am simply wasting my time when reporting here.

Hey, sorry about not many responses. I have not been to this sub-forum in a while, hanging out in GotM, HoF, General, MP, and Strat more, but I am catching up. I am up to the post I quoted, so I am letting you know I love this story so far. When I catch up all the way, I will post more. Two perspectives are awesome. I like the way tzaari does screenshots (slightly smaller, fit on screen, no scrolling).

These are the folks not in the game who have posted. I would think about 10% poster to reader. Many people lurk for years without joining (like me). I went for three years from my second post until my third. The story Civilization by helmling made me dust my password off and post again.
Also, this is kind of a novel concept that you don't often see. I really hope that you guys do more games like this. I think it will gather momentum over time and become really popular as more folks come and go to this area of the site.

I assume he meant how we write our reports from our point of view and also include opinions of other players, hidden to other players but not for them. Then they can actually compare how correct our assumptions of others are.

So, I thought it might be appropriate to share my two cents to this excellent thread. Im the player of Mayas, or as we are known in this parallel universe, Realm of Madness.

In ancient times, before mankind, Ctulhu and his star spawn dominated this world and fought with the strange and disturbing entitites for aeons. But the alignment of the stars is wrong at this pitiful, fleeting, mortal time and so dead Ctulhu lies dreaming in his house at the sunken city of R'lyeh.

Wait, its no longer sunken. Star spawn got tired of being underwater and thought it would be fun for a change to move in to a jungle and build some sweet pyramids for their dead master. And also spread their religion, Iä! Iä!

Spoiler The spread of glorious madness in ancient times :
D9C1D7F1B1BD54CEE2178F02A64B95155D1B4F78

For the first two gaming times the spread of madness went in the top 3, but then the dreaded elder god took a trip to Stockholm and the vice-president of the realms of the madness happened to be Azatoth, the blind fool also known as AI.

Predictably, AI colossally shoggothed up with bad decision-making in teching and planting some stupid cities which is why there is a empty no-mans land in our continent.

The next time after Ctulhu was back in action went into correcting the mistakes of Azatoth and adopting some ORDER for the Realm of Madness. Bu-huu, no free tenents for us, since Azatoth squandered our tech lead.

As we were playing a point game, there was a slight problem. Madness was lacking in points and needed some fast. And about 20 hexes away lay the Zulu lands. First, Hastur, the unspeakable horror, whispered some sweet lies about Madness-backed invasion of Arabia in the north. Then, when Zulus were fooled by our insane and deranged promises of pillage and glory, army group Shoggoth sprang into action and rampaged through two cities, including Zulu capitol and crushed their Infantry with sheer numbers of line infantry and artillery.

Spoiler Resistance is futile and not even noted by our immortal overlord :
2F99B7DAB1189F4D508CADAA769D283F602023DC

This was little bit complicated by the world police Japan who decided to raid our trade ships, sunk our fleet and try to force us into peace. Finally they managed even to vote us into trade embargo but shoggoth that, we have anyway no use for petty mortal gold.

Spoiler SPOILER ALERT FOR OTHER PLAYERS :

Of course Ctulhu cannot allow this kind of insult. Before this game is over, Japanese coast shall burn in :nuke:nuclear:nuke: fire. No one shoggoths us for free, no one.

In the end, insanity and chaos prevailed and large parts of zulu lands were subjugated. Points started to look good and thanks to our insane factory- and public school spam science started to soar.

Ctulhu contemplated the situation in his dreams, and decided he needed more citites from the mortals of Arabia, which were happy to sell some. Now the realms of madness were finally from Ocean to ocean and one big, insane and unhappy primordial force.

Then the balance of the power in the Madness-part of our continent was dramatically altered as some wretched Numenorian lord decided to buy the city of Antwerpen. Army group Shoggoth sprang into action, demanded open borders from zulus which were in the way and closed in for a kill before gondorians could amass power in to the city.

Then the nukes dropped on Minas Anor and world shook. Suddenly, balance shifted again and lo and behold, Realms of Madness rose to the third rank on top of the gondorian radioactive skeletons.

Gondorians saw what we were doing around Antwerpen and the swanparatroopers of Dol Amroth made a pre-emptive strike against insane artillery and spread the flames of war also to this continent. Goddamn those gondorians.

Spoiler Antwerpen front :

So it was a very interesting game last tuesday and it seems that Realms of Madness are quite comfortably in the leading ranks. Perhaps we will finish a nice third or something, depending on the war of the superpowers on the other continent.

Spoiler Spoiler alert for other players, dont peek :

Realms of madness attacked Antwerpen because there is uranium in there which we understandably need quite bad. Gondor has agreed to sell us some if we leave Antwerpen in peace which we also will, since we have no desire for Minas Anor to fall to moroccoan hands. Who controls Minas Anor also likely wins the game from this point on, since half of the wonders are there and they make quite a hefty amount of points.

There is also lots of uranium on Arab lands, which are frankly underdeveloped and underdefended, so thats obviously our next target when big boys are swinging with nukes an' . Our endgame strategy is just go in to a invading frenzy on east where are the weak zulu and arab lands and gather points with conquered cities.

Its rather likely that if I can start to close the 150-point gap between me and Tzaari, there will be a apocalyptic all-out nuclear destruction around turn 480-90 between us. Since its rather likely that Japan stabs morocco on the back at some point, its likely that the fight for the win will be between me and Tzaari.

I took quietly tech lead back in the last game, dont think no one has noticed yet that Im rising silently to number one in rather many graphs. But I believe they will, I have 3 turns to satellites and them Im going to use the stored GE to quickly get Hubble.

And finally, the glorious Realms of madness:

Edit: Also, concerning the questions for the enemies, I have a eternal hatred for Forodus, the player of Romans whom I have never been able to fully repay one instance where our game crashed in the middle of the war and we had to backtrack couple of autosaves. Since he knew what he had done wrong in the war it ended costing me one city I would not have lost without this save scumming. I was very disappointed by the early destruction of him since I was really looking forwards repaying him some old debts.

I found that write-up quite funny, Beachead. You sound like you've done pretty well ruling the lands of insanity. :crazyeye:

Also, welcome to all of you who have just joined this forum!

Yes, exactly, knowing many perspectives of MP is awesome and not often done. Like I said, over time, I think this could become very popular. Please keep up the good work. And now the Mayans report also! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Death or glory, a superhuman task awaits Venice Gondor. Will be reported tomorrow.

There is no sufficient swear words in English to describe this powerless anger. Almost 3 hours of "game time" now with waiting for game to start, lagging in game and rehosting. Oh, and almost 3 turns done!

Well, we have 1 hour left and managed to change host so perhaps there will be more turns today.

Part 6.5, Moroccan Still Movie in Action

This was a short session in turns. In 4,5 hours we managed only 11 turns from 369-381, because desynccing and lag in every turn. Therefore this post is a short one. Hope the game works better next week, it was damn nearly unplayable yesterday..

Spanish Economical Cost Cut program starts by cutting the maintenance cost on roads. What could go wrong there? Next step was the lifting of Spanish foreign trade ban by World Congress as suggested by Japan. Thanks Japan! Now we only need to lift the ban on Mayas, so we have somebody to trade with..

While the war on the Western Continent raged on, Spain was faced with a dilemma. Should we do something to help Venetians, so Morocco could not claim Minas Anor with its collection of wonders? Or should we do something else? When "Aiding the Venetians, who slowed down the Imperial Conquest for thousand years" and "Do something else" were put together and compared in small details, "Do something else" was a clear winner.

A small army was formed of troops from former Spanish Western Defense Task force and send over the sea. There was no Japanese ships this time to observe things. The improvised army reached its goal in 1956 AD, also known as 7 turns and 3 hours after start of the game. A war was declared.

"Yes, yes! Kick the fallen!" em, no. How about "This will teach you to call us evil!" Ehm, no.. lets try "FREEDOM FOR THE POPE!" Ah, whatever. Lets just get this war started!

Former Spanish Western Defense Task force was proven somewhat ill-equipped for the task of freeing Vatican City. There was not enough free room for artillery and troops to be set effectively. The artillery pieces that dominated battlefields of early 1900 were picked like a flies by Vatican counter fire and Battleships. Also the Spanish tactic of "Human Wave" proved to be of little effect. For Spanish side that is. Venetians were probably happy to see so much dead Spaniards on the gates of Vatican. Spanish Destroyer Armada was almost unarmed, since there was only 1 hex of sea clear for attack.

So this initial attack could be a failure for Spain, or death for Vatican defenders by drowning in sea of drops, that would be very costly in units for Spain. But do not despair! Flashes from the north tell us that Minas Anor might be ready to collapse. And while Spain still lacks of nuclear weapons, there is a surprise coming on that should prove to be more effective compared to traditional artillery.

Demographics in turn 380. Not much to say here since it is only 10 turns after the last one

Spoiler Not for other players to read! :
Yes, I should have waited for Spanish Aircraft Carriers to be ready before starting the war for Vatican. Admittedly I was quite frustrated for slow game pace and ineffective Moroccan attack on Minas Anor where nuclear weapons were used in abundance on land, but none were fired to Venetian Battleships.

In 6 turns I will however have 2 Carriers ready. It will probably take 4 turns to the first one on firing range, and 8 turns to get them both bombarding Vatican. Since Vatican defenses are already half bombarded, I think the city will fall when second carrier gets in range. This is off course, if there is still one land unit or destroyer left to take the city..

Why I am taking Vatican? Simply because it is guarding the entrance to Antarctic Ocean south from Morocco. One who controls the Vatican City, guards the passage. Moroccans don't seem to be very interested in building up a fleet, but then again I don't want them to see Spanish one when it floats in positions around the world..

Spoiler Things that WERE SERIOUSLY BUGGING SPAIN THIS TIME :
Where should I start? Well lets start from the start since people like to start from start.

-Lobby. Connection issues with several players made us take the start twice. If this not ironic enough, I already had made people to restart their Steam before the game even begun to avoid these damn connection issues! It took some 15 minutes to get the game started..

-The first 2 hours and 15 minutes we managed to play for 3 turns. Thats how bad it was. Yes we have a lot of units and a lot of players, but game was practically freezing time to time. "Waiting for players" is not a nice thing to see for 20 minutes, when everybody has ended their turn a long time ago. After this we changed host. For rest of the session game worked slightly better, although there was resynccing by game after every turn. The game actually ended because it stopped working.

-Trade bug

I don't post because I read these threads on my phone and it's a real mission to type on it :( Really enjoying your game so far though and I feel your pain with the resyncing

Out doom is close, heroes are dead. And rest of players are like dogs: slowly walking and waiting a around wounded prey...

Minas Anor may fall, but I have to say, your people have fought a good fight. It's amazing that you've actually held out this long.

Edit: Btw, just thought I'd let you know that some of the screenies are working right.

Wow. Venice is putting up a figth! More than anyone expected. Well done.

So in your group, nukes are just another weapon. No restrictions or penalties for using them?

Same here, not all the screenshots are working.

Is it to much to ask, that you make the pictures the same format as Spain? On an Ipad the expansion of the pictures makes the text so so tiny.

What say da maroc about this war?

Minas Anor has so good defensive position. It could have been easier for Morocco, if he had build a strong navy. Then there would have been more room to move his units and use sea tiles as well, but he decided not to do this and instead to fight a modern Thermopylae. Effective? No. Entertaining? Quite so.

And yes, we use nukes as any other weapon, but like you can see, while they are very powerful you can't win a war solely by using nukes. You still need conventional army to take cities and hold them and navy to do the same thing on seas. This war between Venice and Morocco+Japan is somewhat a special case.

In other games we have had long nuclear wars, but in those ones the war has became longer and there was more room for units to maneuver. In first phase you try to use your nukes to take out enemy nukes. After that you use what you still have left, to take out enemy conventional army, before sending in your own army. If successful, attacker won the war there leaving defender with only a handful of conventional troops. However defender can counter this by his nuclear weapons if he spread and placed them and his conventional army/air force well enough. :nuke:

Xaviien said:
I had written a long and entertaining post about how much I am enjoying this thread, but my phone got upset and threw it away.

Long story short, I like it!

Well thanks anyway! :)

It seems that more and more people are using phones/tablets these days. I have noticed in other boards that it cuts down the number and length of posts. Probably one reason for me not buying one so far. I like to write/make things instead of only consuming stuff. :D

Now all pictures work as intended. And they are spoiler-free to everybody! (spoiler: i die)

So could have I evaded this doom? Against 10 nuclear bombs any army is doomed so no matter how big army or how much gold I accumulated end would have been the same bitter. So political alliance was only option and on my defence: I had it. I thought Marocco would want to win the game by killing Assyria or Japan and settling rest of the continent while I keep congress under control and guard his back. And if Marocco wanted to annex me Japan and Assyria would stop it because they are next food to serve. Why Japan is helping Marocco is a mystery but a high price they had to pay. Spain could have been able to save me but he chose short-term victory. Maya is growing stronger and Japan and Marocco are allied so he will have hard choises later how to win.

Part 7, The end of Atomic Era
Turns 381-405

The game continued today with four players away. Players of Assyria, Arabia and Japan were absent, Zulus decided to quit. Luckily enough the game worked better for rest of us.

But the war against Venice was not over yet. The first Spanish attack was defeated by Venice. Artillery was hopelessly outdated against the defenses of Vatican City, as was the situation with Venetian ground troops. Forces lead by Jean d'Arc were defeated one turn before the reinforcements arrived.

Maid of Orleans almost saw Spain to take Vatican and install Pope of Imperial God to rule there

This second wave was more successful. Group of infantry and gunships supported by carrier based bombers and fighter were efficient enough. However Venetians planted a counter attack on sea. 4 Battleships and many destroyers attacked Spanish destroyers guarding the Vatican Strait. At the same time Moroccans made peace with Venice after many unsuccessful attempt to take Minas Anor. Furious for this counter attack, Spaniards ordered their Armada to attack Venetian navy. Carriers took out most of the opposing force and Destroyers did the rest sinking all the venetian destroyers and many of the Battleships. Venetians retreated.

Counter attack against a counter attack was successful

While not successful to take out Spanish navy, Venetian counter attack had successfully prevented Spain to use its aircraft against Vatican. Planes were badly damaged and could not attack against anything without turning to kamikaze. In two turns, most of the Spanish second wave on land was destroyed. At this point carrier fleet was retreated to north, to resupply with new planes. Obsolete fighters were upgraded to jet fighters. Bombers were repaired. And there was also a new weapon. A weapon Spain intended to use more efficiently than Moroccans had done.

Spain joined the Nuclear Bombers Club making the peninsula of Gondor even more glowing place

Before the attack Spain made it sure to scout out Venetian ground army. It was quite impressive how much units Venetians had managed to get in short time. But it was even shorter time for Spanish strategic bombers to reach those units and drop "Maid of Orleans", "Fat Lady" and "Imperial Pope". Trio took out the Venetian army, probably some of the Venetian battleships on western shore of Vatican and much of the Vatican City defenses. 1975 AD Vatican City was free at last!

I think there was white smoke somewhere there among the black cloud rising from Minas Anor?

The next phase of the war saw short conflict between Morocco and Spain. When Spanish Fleet continued to west to take Minas Anor, Morocco declared war for Venice. Several new nuclear explosions shook the hills of Minas Anor. Moroccan attack only prepared the city for Spanish assault. When Spain was about to take the city, Morocco declared war for Spain. Last attempt to destroy Spanish fleet managed to take out couple of destroyers and Moroccan troops took Minas Anor. After that Spanish fleet made counter attack and so the city was conquered twice in the same turn.

For a short while Spain held the Minas Anor. However Moroccan army was too strong and Spanish army too far away to keep the city

Last venetian counter attack made things marginally harder for Spain, but it was enough. Moroccan modern armors were bombarded by Spanish aircraft, but there was no ground units to hold the city. Therefore when Morocco offered ceasefire, Spain agreed. The war against Venice ended in 1982 AD when last Venetian stronghold of Colombo was taken by Spanish Armada.

Aftermath

Venetians left the stage in same manner they had performed. Their last words were heard in World Congress where Venetian made resolution of Nuclear Weapons Ban was voted one turn before the extinction of Venetians. Spain voted yes with all of its 10 votes, one turn before the Venetians lost Colombo for Spain.

1985 AD the world is quite a different place. Madness is steamrolling to Arabia and making its way up with points. Venice is gone. While Morocco took Minas Anor and the major share of points to take from Venice, Spain took Vatican and Colombo and Mayas took Antwerp. All these three Great Powers are now within 100 points, with Morocco leading only 63 points before Mayas and 72 for Spain.

There is a thing or two left to say, but these things are best left in spoiler-tags. Anyway, thanks for Calad for excellent (while perhaps time to time diplomatically pesky) game with Venice. I for one did not expect Venice to stand this long. Sure, there was luck involved in Venetian game, but its one thing to be lucky and another to make use of that luck. Venice was one tough nut to crack.

Demographics in turn 405. Japan has the most powerful army in the world.

s2K7tys.png

Victory points. Destruction of Venice changed the situation a lot

Spoiler Not for other players to read :
Why did I vote yes to ban the nuclear weapons, when I could have voted against the ban and probably make the proposal fail?

While I don't really expect Mayas to attack Spain I still really expect Mayas to attack Spain. If there is one thing in Arabia, there is a lot of uranium. Mayas do have their own mines but if there is to be a nuclear war between Mayas and Spain, more is better. Internationally it is now Spain that makes the proposals (along with Japan)

The second reason was Morocco. While he used his nuclear weapons inefficiently, he had a lot of them. Spain now holds two strategically important positions on Western Continent. One of those is the Vatican straits, that leads directly South from Morocco. Second is Colombo. While it is too narrow by land to be a proper invasion bridgehead, it is still neighboring Moroccan Capital. And there is actually couple of nice factories right on the other side of the border and Spain has couple unused of Generals..

The general situation is now close in many ways. Spain probably has the control on seas and definitely on Southern sea. Continental Strait is also guarded, but I'd like to place there more ships. The sea between Spain and Mayas is almost undefended, because I had to take most of Spanish ships to attack on Venice. That is the first thing that must be corrected.

Technologically Spain is somewhat behind at this point, but this does not bother me so much, because Spain also produces a lot of research points now. They might go as high as 2000 per turn, if I can turn cities for research. That is probably not possible economically, but perhaps I don't need to do it anyway. Of the late game units Spain only lacks Guided Missile Cruisers and Stealth Bombers.

Economically things will be better if Mayas decide not to attack Spain. Then I can turn trade routes to Mayan cities. I'll probably make some money also by disband old artillery pieces that are too expensive to upgrade.

Parts of Spanish Empire and Fleet disposition South on Western Continent

Spoiler Things that were bugging Spain :
-Lobby Bugs

-Lag. When it takes 1-2 seconds to actually activate a new unit, it takes about 2 minutes to activate them all during a turn. It takes about 1 minute to change the turn. There is also lag on start of the turn ~10 seconds.

-Unit auto cycle. Why does this thing ALWAYS decide to choose units very far away from each other? I don't want to move my worker on another continent when there is war going on on another part of the map. And I don't want to use those airplanes that are based on carrier, before moving the said carrier on better place.

-Re-Sync. It took 30 minutes to get the game started this time and we had 30 minutes more to rehost the game because dropping out of the game just managed to corrupt the save for Moroccan player.

-Lets do some math. Today we played for 4,5 hours today. We had a 30minutes break, so the actual 'playing time' is 4 hours.

Starting the game, resynccing and re-hosting took 1 hour. If it takes for the game 1 minute to change the turn, there was 25 minutes used for waiting this (for we played 25 turns. If there is about 10 seconds wait before every turn, it means about 4 minutes of time waiting for the lag to go away. Since we had 4 players you need to count this 4 times (because we were at war with each other for most of the game) that makes 16 minutes. So this adds up to 41 minutes of waiting.

So basically in 4 hours playing session we were waiting for things to work for 1 hours 41 minutes and actually playing the game for 2 hours 19 minutes. If you count the time that players actually used to do things average turn took about 5 minutes and 33 seconds.

So if the game had worked well we had managed to play for 43-44 turns instead of 25. Probably more, since in peace time you don't need to move some many units.

That turned out to be quite a crazy war. It's amazing how long Venice managed hold out.
