I need help. I tried playing my first multiplayer game. It was a 1v1 duel on a ring map at quick speed. I got my teeth kicked in. I started off way ahead, but then I slipped somewhere. The game ended in the 1800s with him invading my only city with cavalry and infantry while I defended with dozen of archers, spearmen, and crossbowmen. He built broadway while I was researching feudalism. I need tips and help for multiplayer. Anything would be helpful, thank you. :)

Why did you only have one city? Were you two playing a one city challenge game?

No, it was a duel sized map. I tried to found another city but it got destroyed three turns later. Also, after some cultural expansion there was nothing to settle a city for. So it was pointless.

It may have something to do with your micromanagement vs. your opponent's. Or it could be that he was focusing on economy while you were focused too much on military. Or thirdly it could be that you were focusing on non-essential things, such as wonders. There's not really too much information in your post. If you want, we could set up a 2 vs 2 with me on your team and I could give you some pointers, although I can't really call myself anywhere near an expert.

Alternatively, post a few screenshots, or even better, a video of a game, to help us get a better idea of what you did.

some screen shots might be handy. I would guess that it had to do with your early game play. 1 city really isn't doable, I'm surprised opponent stretched it that long if you only had 1 city. Duel you need to asap get metal, and out of the game types it is the one where you should be most aggressive, even rushing some wars. There will be no other help for that player in duel, and they won't be able to outtech you that far if you are in their land pillaging/ him defending. with more than 2 sides you worry about getting outteched at war, duel you encouraged to fight. IMO early gold not that important. You need spend your turns pushing units to hurt him, or expanding. Especially since online games are played as noble so you can rush units/expand without fear of economy crashing.
