In the new issue of PC Gamer (just arrived in the mail), the Civ IV lead developers are interviewed and state that a patch is in the works to address the infuriating GameSpy problems that we've all experienced. Is there any word on when that patch will be completed?

Whoops I posted this response in that other item, meant to put it here...

Hopefully the upcoming patch will, as the support staffer said, fix the problems some people are having with memory leaks and the like. However I'm concerned that thamer's note above said absolutely nothing about the patch addressing the GameSpy multiplayer problems, which are pervasive and are really holding back the game. I personally know two would-be Civ players who are simply unwilling to try the thing again as long as the multiplayer connectivity is so infuriatingly broken; the GameSpy lobby is rife with similar reports.

The two killer GameSpy issues are the "bad peer" problem, and the game hanging when a player retires as opposed to just exiting to menu. Please tell us that the upcoming patch will deal with those?

i realy want to play on line but i have peer problems can some one help me find the update. also i can get my game to work on a lan eather im not sure if its a the same problem or not. need help asap!

Other than making sure Win XP's internal firewall is disabled, there is no help for you -- the game's online play is just hopelessly broken. I just spent another hour watching dozens of players try and fail to get GameSpy games going, so its not you. Lots of us who know how to disable firewalls and open ports on routers, who play tons of other games via GameSpy with no problems, can't get this thing to work decently. Either Firaxis releases a multiplayer patch very soon or Civ4 will wither and die, which is a shame because it's a great game.

I suggest people email Firaxis staff directly, the relevant email addresses from their website appear to be dbriggs@firaxis.com and kgilmore@firaxis.com. Here is what I just sent them:

I like everything about Civ4 and so do several friends, and yet we are about to delete it from our hard drives. The game's strongest advance over previous titles is its multiplayer play, but unfortunately you released it apparently without bothering to test whether online play would actually work worth a damn. I just spent yet another frustrating hour on GameSpy attempting to get an online game going, listening to the frustration of dozens of other players who can't get past the "bad peer" bug, or whose games freeze up due to the "retire" bug, etc. All of us can play any number of other games online just fine, including via GameSpy; we all know how to disable firewalls and open ports on our routers. We've played LAN games of Civ4 so we know how much fun multiplayer can be -- but since trying to play Civ4 online is such a complete waste of time, we're giving up on it. A damn shame, you had a great game here if you'd just supported its best feature reasonably. For confirmation just spend a little time in the gamespy lobby or on the fansite forums.
