Hi all.
I've got a few suggestions for setting up a civilization 4 multi player game. It would be nice if some standards for creating a multiple player games were used.
The following suggestions I have are:
1) Protect you game.
Protecting you game requires that a user needs a password to join which most of you likely know.
The benefits are as follows:
Saves annoying people trying to join in midway.
Reduces the chance of someone taking your civilization..
Possibly reduces the chance of bad peers/ connection. issues.
Disadvantage
Forget password
I've had games become unplayable due to the constant interruptions with waiting for people to join. When they do finally join most likely they will quit as the civilization is dead or crippled. If you really need a replacement I think there is a chat utility that allows messaging the lobby while playing. Im not familiar with this tool so any advice here would be great.
Regarding people taking over you civilization. I had an experience where the game froze and tried rejoining to find that someone had taken my civilization.. I had even pass worded my civilization which seems to be cleared in my case. How #$@! annoying! I think this might be some kind of bug.
Regarding bad peers this is a complex issue but generally I feel as you have less people joining at the same time this may help reduce connection problems. Note I didnt say eliminate them!
Keep the game password very simple all in one case preferable lowercase. Its only there as a deterrent and not to protect your life savings. You dont want you players to try and rejoin to find out they forgot the password.
2) Appropriate game title
If hosting a protected game I suggest put your user name followed by the appropriate details that describe the format, speed etc. By putting your user name preferable at the start people know who to message to obtain the password instead of having to spam the lobby.
I also find that putting the host name first I can recall the game name a lot easier as it started with the hosts name. A few times Ive forgotten the game name as tried to join probably a half dozen games to get a working one up.
3) Players protect your Civilization/Leader.
Each player can choose you password your civilization. I main reason I suggest this to stop any chance of someone cheating. I stumbled across an undesirable feature which is easily stopped by pass wording your civilization leader.
If there are any comments or suggestions feel free to reply
Cheers,
