Music.txt Limitations

I'm very sure there is a problem with too many songs, which will cause the game to crash, although I don't know the number of songs allowed.

As to the other one, I have absolutely no idea. Sorry :(

@Etain: I have often had glitches with the original soundtrack, it probably has nothing to do with custom tracks. I generally go to Preferences/Sound and select "all sounds off", wait a few seconds and turn them on again. It works fine for me.
I will have to try some custom sounds for a mod I'm working on, I'll post some feedback if I find anything.

So, the original question in this thread was whether a) too many songs or b) songs that were too long would cause the game to crash. I wanted to bump this because for years I've been toying with this and wanted to see if too much data in the music would cause the game to collapse.

So far I haven't been able to create a crash. I've seen upwards of three hours of music in scenarios, and am currently testing out songs that are 10-14 minutes in length and neither situation has affected gameplay yet. I don't know if anyone else has encountered music crashes (other than improper formatting), but I'm going to keep pushing at this and see if I run into limits. I'm wondering if the combination of long IBT calculations and long songs may cause problems in the late Industrial/Modern eras.

The only music-related crash I've had was when trying to use era-specific tracks on a custom map with lots of pre-placed cities in Age 1. The scenario would load, but would crash after the first turn, from what I assume is short-circuiting whatever internal logic handles the build steps. Starting the same scenario in Age 2 had no problems.

Thorvald, were these the full mp3 tracks or the intro wav tracks for era 1? I gotta ask, were the era 1 songs formatted correctly? Were they comparable or extended length to the original mp3 ancient music files? Did you have era 2 songs or did you just use firaxis ones at that point?

I ask because I haven't been able to reproduce any mp3 tracks that crash when they've been formatted right. I wonder if crashes relate to music and in-game calculations overloading the single-core pea brain logic...

I modded the MP3s (and as standalone files they're fine), I didn't even touch the .wavs.

Weird thing is, I just double-checked it now and it does work. :crazyeye: So maybe my old computer was just too feeble to run it right.

A while back I and some friends had a small mod where all nations' theme songs played together in one mp3 file (with some pauses). As I recall it was at least an hour of music but probably more, in one .mp3. Everything worked fine and as expected. If there is a limit to length, I doubt anyone would reach it in practice.
