I just recently got Alpha Centauri from an old friend of mine. I started playing today. I picked the Miriam Godwinson one (i forget). I was nearly going to pick CEO Morgan, but I felt churchy :p

My game result was pretty good. When I last saved, I had about 3 wonders (One was the Empathy Guild and the other was a weather one). The philosophy in the game was quite enlightening, even though I didn't get most of it (I'm 13 for gods sakes). I also had about 8 cities on my continent, everyone else is on their little island as well, except Morgan and the Academician.

I can't wait to get the Dream Twister and the Supercollider!

I am glad you are enjoying the game. If you ever have the urge to try out mutiplayer you can check out the Alpha Centauri MP forums at both Apolyton and WePlayCiv or you can drop me a PM to set up an IP game. If I have the fee time I am always willing to play.

I'm playing my first proper game now after a brief period of trying to understand the controls and basic concepts. It's very good but still a little overwhelming, as any Sid game is at the first attempt. I'm still trying to figure out what the best improvements are for each tile type, where and how quickly to place cities, how to know whether a tech trade (for another tech or for money) is fair or not, and so on. We need a sticky for basic concepts like this! :p

Try the FAQs in Gamespt.

The best way in my opinion is to ask questions in a forum like this.

Generally, rocky squares are best for boreholes or mined or leveled to rolling.

Rolling are good farm squares.

Flat are best for forest.

(Note there are exceptions, but these are generalities for newcomers.)

In the early game, I look for resource specials, monoliths and rivers to decide where to place bases.

Generally, any tech for tech is fair. Since the AIs trade techs, I generally try to trade a tech to as many AIs as I can. If I only get 25 credits when I am trading the tech to the 3rd or 4th AI, it is still gravy.
