Hi all! Its nice to see such fanatics about a game! I have been playing Civ2 for three days now:rolleyes: and I pretty much got all the concepts except a few. So i was wondering if anyone woulld be kind enough to help a newbie out?!

1st:--What in the world do all the abbreviations in these pages mean??? i.e. CFC, HOF, things like that. (those are bad examples but ones like it)

2nd:--What is all this AI talk? I don't understand the concepts of the comps AI.

I appreciate all who respond and all who read this and can not help me. Thanks for your time and help. ~Nick

Hello.Welcome.

CFC-Civilization Fanatics Center
OCC-One City Challenge
ICS-Infinite City Strategy
ZoC-zone of control
HoF-Hall of Fame(high scores)

Wonders are generally referred to with abbreviations.Like Mich's for Michelanglo's Chapel or Cope's for Copernicus Observatory or SoL for Statue of Liberty etc.
Technologies are also often abbreviated like CoL for Code of Laws etc.

If you've only been playing 3 days then you havn't even scratched the surface. There is much to learn Grasshopper ;)

Not sure what you mean by AI talk. The messages during diplomatic meetings are fairly straight forward

Here's Starlifters "Common Civ Terms" thread:

Welcome to CFC!

The "AI" are the game algorithms that make decisions for the other civilizations that you play against. Not all AI civs play the same. Some are more "civilized", like the Aztecs and Babylonians, some are more "militaristic", like the Mongols and Russians. Each set choses different priorities, whether the units they build, the number of cities and their improvements, whether they expand or develop a lot, and what techs they seek to research.

By reading the different threads at CFC (and also Apolyton.Net) you will learn a lot about how Civ works. Start with the War Academy and the Strategy Forum. And consider joining a Game of the Month - it helps starter players learn from more experienced as they post game logs and screen shots.

my first post today...hello...been playing for a long time...

is it just me, or are the barbarians extra stupid. they keep getting suck in places thei boats can easily get out of, but never do.

Welcome to CFC too!

Yes, the AI is kinda stupid, although better than the old Empire, if you remember that game.

Consider a stuck boat a bribing opportunity...

hmm...maybe i should try that next time...

My beef with the AI is with their cowardly leaders. Not only do they stack with their fellow militants but after they've been isolated by the foolish attacks of their comrades and you have them backed into a corner to reap the benefits of their 100G ransom they just decide to disappear.... Couldn't they just disappear to begin with??? .... rotten buggers.

I realize the futility of this post as i doubt barabarians frequent this forum but I felt like venting.:D

As I posted a year ago, rather than looking at them as an annoyance, look at them as a potential benefit. I gather you are talking about Barbarian Leaders, not the AI, but trapping and "capturing" one can be a major boost to your early game. I am often disappointed now that I do not have a couple Barbarian visits before 2000BC - the extra gold has significantly improved a cash-tight situation. The trick is to get them fast enough, before they disappear.

A good reason to get horseback riding early in the game. With horsies, you have a very good chance to capture the barb leaders. With one-movers, it is almost impossible in the early game to collect the coins so necessary to rapid growth.

Not impossible, but more difficult. You have to use terrain correctly. Horses don't always withstand the attack of the Barb Archers that the Leaders hide under, either. I prefer a Horse or Chariot from a Hut as my "Leader buster", with a Phalanx as the "anvil" of attack. In a pinch, I've done it with three Warriors on a peninsula.

With a horse, it's of course better to attack the barb archer as its defence is in fact less than the stated 2.

After some playing experience you get a feel for the "hot spots" that barbs sprout from and plan your trap accordingly. With a diplo you could also plan to bribe a cheap barb trireme or caravel - great for an inland city (eg in OCC) especially if it becomes a None unit).
