I wish Civ producers would do what any sane city-builder does when faced with a river. Before the tech Bridge Building, build on only ONE side of the river. Then, after Bridge Building, have the city on BOTH sides, with bridges in between... am I insane for thinking that would be AWESOME!?! Stone bridges for Ancient Era, Brick/mortar for Middle, Steel for Industrial, and cement for modern! Yes, I know there aren't any "eras" for techs, but the cities will still change design, right? If I see stone cities in the Modern era, I'll have to do this:

:rotfl:

The Techs are still attached to Eras, but you no longer have to research an entire era to get to the next one. It's basically one big tech tree, but each tech has an "era" attribute stamped on it. Presumably, your cities change once you research any tech that has a higher "era" attached to it. So, you get Medieval cities if you research Calendar, Code of Laws, Construction, Optics, etc.

As to the main point of the topic, I'm afraid I don't quite understand what you're saying.

This would only effect look and not actual game play. A city is on only one square at less you are talking about city radius inwhich case it wouldnt be a favorable addition to the game

What I'm suggesting is only looks, but it was a touch of realism I always wanted. Make it possible to build cities on Rivers, like Civ I, and have the river have the same benefits as whatever terrain it's on. Past Bridge Building, have bridges extend across the river, so the city is on both sides of the river. Cities with said bridges have their trade in the city square increased by 1. It's mostly looks, I know, but it's how any city built on a river is done.

...or you can build two cities on either side of the river, like Buda and Pest. After you build a bridge, the cities join as Budapest. For Civ4 this is late and probably needless but fun.

Not sure whether you should get a :p or a :shakehead.
Oh well, you get a :rotfl: anyway.
