My little secret for keeping up in the Deity Tech Race

I use this strategy a lot of the time although I'm still not sure if it doesn't affect the attitude from AI's in any way. I'm under the impression they'll notice this and are more reluctant for new gpt afterwards. Not really sure because I never tested it.

I did test if the Ai would alwys attack anyway. They don't. Sometimes they'll declare war after a got anyway, other times they'll turn around and release their forces on someone else. I'm thinking having another weak civ to slap around nearby increases the chance they'll honor the deal.

This deal will sometime backfire on you. I've had several instances where I made gpt expecting the comp to declare war but the Ai decided not to. This resulted in me declaring war on them because I need the money. This means no more gpt deals with any other civs for techs

Another tech deal which works. When you're at the gates of a civ's last city and have peace you can also sell a tech for lump sum ampunt, declare war and take the last city. You'll conquer a lot of your gold back this way. Used this in the tournament 4-3 game. Payed 900 gold to Alexander for a tech, conquered his last city and got 730 gold back. Pretty cheap tech IMO. This will be a rep ruiner when you have forces in their territory when you declare war or declare war before the 20turn peace deal is over.

Since everyone here know how to beat up the AIs for tech
Umm...:( I don't know how to do that. I'm not an expert player nor do I dare defy the AI on a high level like that. Of course I'm stupid enough to let myself fall behind in tech - in one gotm, I fell behind a whole age in tech, literally.

Falling behind is the rule at tougher levels. The trick to winning is figuring was to keep up. I don't do it very well either, but GOTM and the dialogs have helped enormously.

What about this?
You have an MPP with China. China just declared war on the aztecs. Aztecs haven't attacked China in order to draw you into it, so... you make a trade with the Aztecs. Tech for gpt. When the aztecs inevitably attack China and you're brought into the war against them, the deal is cancelled.

This works especially well if the Aztecs are on another side of the map, and will take several turns before reaching you.

The benefits: You get the tech, and don't have to pay for it. If I'm not mistaken, your bond with China grows stronger as well for defending them.

You break the deal by declaring war.
You get the rep hit.
You won't get any gpt deals in the future.

@DivineImpact: As Tao says, this will result in you getting no gpt for tech deal ever after. Use this only when you're sure you don't need those deals anymore

And what a secret this is...

If anyone here hasn't been using it already you should smack your head off a wall right now. Common sense isn't it?

Unless your are playing a lot of civ, you may not realize that.;) Therefore, it's really a secret for the beginners.

Round things rolling is common sense but what a breakthrough the wheel was.;)

This beginner thanks Moonsinger for her tactical advice. I used this to great effect in GOTM18. Three techs for 2 turns of 93gpt!

I haven't played diety much and I have never won a game on that level.

I am playing one now and as usual I am surround by civs. If things hold true to form two or three will soon declare on me and I have no IRON.

Diety is cruel to us mere humans.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that this strategy has really worked for me, though I do believe that it is a major flaw and a borderline bug. I mean, why would a civ about to attack me give me something for nothing knowing it would declare war at its first convenience? Whatever, I always now try to trade something for gpt before telling whoever it is to "get out of my territory or face war." Until a patch corrects this, I see no problem with exploiting it.
