My sad story...

Alrighty, I'm posting my Dxdiag files again in the hopes of getting some answers, since 2kgames.com's technical support can't be bothered with reading their email OR answering their phones. (Let me add that I don't begrudge the community's non-responsiveness to my previous query. It isn't your job to fix Firaxis's junk.)

These are my symptoms:

1) The Bink videos, Intro and Wonder are so choppy as to be unwatchable.
2) Towards the endgame on my huge world, the system seems to have immense problems with scrolling. It will occasionally pause while trying to render a screen leaving a landscape denuded of cities or units. Sometimes it will just go black entirely and take its sweet time about crashing to the desktop. When it does, it has taken the OS's display settings with it. I am stuck with 800X600 with 4 bit color and have no choice but to restart. The latter happens about once every ninety minutes. (In the Huge World endgame.)

This is what I have done to stop them:

1) I have patched to 1.52. (This actually made the Bink videos worse.
2) I ran a full defrag on the HD. (Hey maybe having the file parts closer together will stop the videos from skipping right?)
3) I cut the graphical quality to Medium and then to Low. This did nothing to stop the CTDs.
4) I sent an email to Take2 tech support on Wednsday of last week. I have recieved neither a reply nor an automated acknowledgement of receipt.
5) I spent a futile hour on the phone today attempting to get to their tech support department. I was disconnected 4 times on being told that nobody was available and that I should call back later. I also obtained and attempted to use the front desk's phone number. Apparently they were out for the observance of New Year's day. (A message in the phone system informing me of this before I went onto hold would have been polite.)

Attached is my dxdiag file.

Hopefully someone can end this insanity.

I have the same video card and have the same issues with the videos, the patch made them worse but they will play fine outside the game. Low-res movies are in the pipeline though which hopefully will help. They are just too large for some systems and video cards to cope with whilst running Civ4 which hogs most of the resources.
As for the crashing to 4-bit, I've read that turning off AGP acceleration in the DXDiag makes things less buggy. Could always give it a shot. I seem to remember a thread on this issue but can't find it now, hopefully someone else will have a better idea.

Reading the DXDiag file though, your system is more than capable of running the game. The weak link is maybe the Video card.

Leto, when you restart a saved game, is the choppiness gone only to return ~90 minutes later?

Depending on the brand of certain components defragging could improve playback since it can sequentially stream instead of moving the head around all over the place.

Just to make sure, there's no disk intensive applications running, right? Things like torrent programs or emule and the likes can hose a system pretty well.

No the choppiness is there right away on any scrolling. 90 minutes is the half life before the CTD.

I did in fact run a full defrag.

And no bittorrent is disabled and not running. Norton is up but other than that I'm pretty ruthless about killing the fat. Hell I even turned off MySQL, and that's about as benign a service as you can get. (For what I'm using it for anyway.)

Norton is running while you play the game?

If so, turn it off both thru startup and services.

I can play with norton in the background but it will ctd on me every session.

No ctd when its off ever.

Nope, killing Norton doesn't stop the signature CTD. Although the app may run more smoothly...

just how did you kill norton.

disabled it thru a norton screen?

turned it off in startup?

If you did either of those methods, then you didnt turn it off.

NORTON IS THE DEVIL:mad: ;)

You have to shut off all NON MS services and startup items thru MS CONFIG to truly kill Norton.

Yeah, I spoke to Daniel from Take2 this evening. We did shut down all of the non-MS services and such and this had no effect on the Bink movies. (We didn't check the CTD issues.) I have them all off now, so I guess I might try again later.
